Re: Will you get the A or B? Why?

I have the Nokia N800 (same specs as the N810 mentioned above), and a Nokia N900 as well. The N800 is still good for everything non-flash, the only problem is that original batteries are not made anymore (and the 3party ones are rubbish, as I\'ve experienced). N900 is totally good. Oh, and a Pandora too - 256MB RAM as well. And yeah, a Beagleboard. And all in all, bigger memory is always better.

I would go for the B if I could, because of the memory. If it was only the Ethernet I wouldn\'t worry much, I have an Apple USB Ethernet stick that works perfectly with every Linux device I\'ve tried it with (Pandora, Beagleboard, laptops, PCs). But the 256MB will make a very useful difference.

Unfortunately the currently known B price will tip it just above the value that triggers all kinds of VAT and customs handling charges when shipped to Norway, so it would _nearly_ double the effective price, from $35 to $66 (if shipped through mail, shipping not included). So I wish the Ethernet wasn\'t included (the Apple USB will do the job just as fine), if the price was two dollars lower all would be good: No Norwegian VAT. Oh Well. But $66 is quite different from $35, not to mention $25 for the A. Painful decision.

probably a A, just because i see that it\'s gonna be very hard to get a B, If they are still in stock i will get a B, but I\'m perfectly happy with a A. I don\'t se 128mb of ram as a real limit, i have run full desktop os\'s on that much ram (XP, OSX 10.4, etc...)

I\'ll be getting the B model.
Strictly for the extra ram, as wifi is all I have in my apartment.

Hopefully i\'ll be quick enough :)

B because of network. Unless I can find a cheap USB-ethernet (not wi-fi), in which case A.[/quote]

I bought one on ebay for 2 euros, and it works with open-source, third part drivers:

As it is often the case with such cheap teachies on ebay, however, specs seldom include details on chipset useful to know about them being supported in floss.
Here, to, I am basing on exterior appearance. The thing looks like:

First, a model B as a development platform, then a few As for my \"production\" embedded music projects, where a network connection would be useless. Then another B for an always-on ssh/mail/web/diaspora/[whatever] server at home.

B for me to play around with, then replace with an A if possible, so continue to use original B. By time second project is done will hope a C variation will be available with those USB 3 ports, dedicated graphics card, Dvd drive at same size and ½ price. :)

I\'ll buy the B Model for Ethernet and the RAM to run Chrome and possibly use it as a digital signage player.

I\'ll get a B for the ram and the ethernet (could do usb wifi, but nice to have the other option) ram is like money , always better to have more than you need than less and we can\'t really change our minds and plug in more later.--mike

B, mostly for the extra RAM... I plan to use this for robotics applications, and I\'d really like to have the RAM for doing things like SLAM that I can\'t do on something small like the Arduino...

B for me - extra RAM always comes in useful and gives you more options. I will also make use of Ethernet even though I plan to buy USB WiFi at some point later on.

I\'d like a B for a couple reasons. First, it seems a far cheaper route to getting media from my desktop computer to my old analog TV. Second, because it\'s the lynchpin cpu processor I need to activate Skynet.
I sometimes ride my Pi to the Forum.

B -- almost equally for the more RAM and the ethernet.

I find RAM is the most common reason why a computer becomes unusable for me. And I have been doing networking for over 20 years so I can hardly imagine a computer without ethernet or at least wifi. (I could use a usb dongle, but the price difference A vs B makes B a clear winner.)

And just as another thought... I find the model \'A\' is more comparable to an AVR... The \'A\' has USB host, full linux, and HDMI with 1080p video decoding. The AVR is dirt cheap and has a wide variety of built-in peripherals. For me the choice is not obvious. Now if while using a model \'B\' I find some application suited to a model \'A\', then the choice would be obvious.

B - because of the RAM primarily, the Ethernet is just a little bonus for me.

In the future I think  RAM would be one of the best things to upgrade, a 1gb model would certainly appeal to me

Model B for me, because of the Ethernet and RAM.

I plan on using it as my main computer (I don't really need to be running some x86 powerhouse, as it's far too much for my requirements!), and already know from using my Pandora for these tasks that 256MB of RAM is plenty for this, for me.

I think B for the ethernet and RAM. Looking at previous posts to this topic its going to go fast!

B for network and memory - even more memory to run RAM disks and write protected SD card.

B. The additional USB, network socket and double the memory makes it more compelling for me for the small increase in price - I probably won't need to get a USB hub or WiFi dongle, so will cost me less overall to get using it.

B because of RAM and LAN. After some testing probably few A's if in stock.

Sidenote: Does anyone knows how many of each kind are gonna be produced as first batch?

I would start with at least two B models for development and try to find some IrDA or BlueTooth adapter with drivers/support for ARM linux.

If there are no such adapters, I would stick with model B otherwise I would add some A models to my pool of devices, too.

B if I can get one.  The extra memory, usb port and ethernet make it a no brainer.

I would have thought that for the present, it would be better to put the limited manufacturing resources into just making B models.

Also, the danger of producing an A model is that school bean counters will force teachers to order As rather than Bs, purely on the basis of cost, rather than educational potential.

So my vote is to go with making just Bs.  Cs and Ds will be welcome later too.

I am going to get both 1 A model and 4 B models, to run in a Beowulf setup. I am really exited to play with these new toys!
Com out.
