Re: Pi3 internet browsing and Youtube performance

Most apps under raspbian do not use gpu memory - only apps that support gpu acceleration.

Video decode in chromium benefits from having 80M.
Higher will make no difference (and if you go too high the arm may suffer when running multiple applications, or with many tabs).

omxplayer can need more than 64M with 1080p streams with many reference frames. 80M is probably fine for that.

Kodi is the other major use case that requires more gpu memory. 128M is considered a minimum but 256M is recommended on a Pi2/Pi3.
If you are not using Kodi it is unlikely you'll need more than 80M.

Thanks I set it to 80M.

I use Kweb and Chromium Hardware Acceleration with OMXPlayerGui when needed.

Your advice has been helpful.

I'm really trying to find a good optimal and lean Ram setting and your suggestion of 80 has been very enlightening.

Thanks

Has Chromium been updated recently? Or something changed? I did an apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade this morning.

Having been able to handle full screen YouTube videos previously, my Pi's are unable to play YouTube videos at all now, or at best they play for 20/30s before the they start to permanently buffer, even on the small standard window. I have to reboot the machine in order to get YouTube working again and then the issue returns after a 30 seconds or so.

I can play Youtube in 1080p on full screen with some freezes here and there at the start.
The CPU usage is around 70%. Of course I am on Raspbian and Chromium.
I am actually pretty impressed with the results considering that a PC with Core 2 Duo and HD 6640 can't do that.
Sorry for my terrible english, I am not a native speaker.

This worked for me. Using Chromium, YouTube had interruptions every few seconds when full screen, but now plays great. Thanks!
