remove the $25

Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:57 pm

http://www.raspberrypi.org/

stated $25 but currently, AFAIK, we are only making Model B, which is #35. For newbie, it's actually quite a bit confusing.... Please consider making a strong statement up there.

The FAQ says:
"How much will it cost?

The Model A will cost $25 and the Model B $35, plus local taxes."

I think its clear enough, except that maybe some people might think the "plus local taxes" only applies to the $35 model (wishful thinking) due to the ambiguous wording.

Its true however that "An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte!" at the moment is only a promise for the future, as the model A isn't sold yet, and won't be for some time to come.

Just kidding, the Foundation have said that the Model A is due in "Autumn".

Autumn when in the middle of summer is in my reckoning indeed "for some time to come".

The $25 tag line has bothered me for quite a while. I know the Model A will eventually be available at that price but it isn't now. Almost falls into the bait and switch category ;)

Given the problems with the USB chip/driver on the B, the "A" sounds like a better bet tbh.

Given the naivety-related issues seen so far (the initial bunfight when the Pi went on sale, the deliberate but undocumented USB current limit and the clamour for MPEG-2 support from people who assumed that a device with a chunky graphics chip must be a media player) then I think that binning the $25 tag would save a lot of B.S.

Here in Euroland consumers are used to seeing tax-inclusive prices when buying stuff*. Any buyer for whom the $ is their native currency will end up paying rather more than $25. Either way it's a possible source of ugliness and given the current over subscription I don't think that punting the Pi as "Nearly Free! + shipping + taxes" is financially justifiable.

*Some buyers may be lucky enough to be zero-rated, but I imagine that most users won't be claiming the VAT back.

Too right mate. It's mid-winter in New Zealand at the moment. Looking outside its blue sky, sunny and 18°C.

What's up with the UK? Don't you all want a nice Olympics or something?

Olympics = London (while the rest of the country pick up the tab). Then there's the inordinate amount of coverage for the heavily sponsored stuff, while a lot of the interesting events are ignored completely...

Any sporting event that is sponsored by companies that punt fizzy pop and junk food deserves nothing but derision anyway IMO.

Anyway, back to the thread :)

Well, I'm in the netherlands, and this "summer" is the worst one since decades, and the last decades the summers haven't been too good either. I assume it must be the climate change. So when I said "summer" I was simply stating "halfway july", not commenting on the %$*&@# weather.

On topic, I agree. Seriously, the 25 dollar thing isn't true at all. It's 45 dollars. maybe closer to 30 with the cheaper model, which doesn't exist yet.

Afaict If you buy from RS in the UK and you buy in quantity you can get the model B for less than $35+TAX (we were always told that the $25 and $35 figures excluded tax).

Farnell OTOH seem to be rolling UK delivery into the list price of the product and not giving any discounts for bulk buying.
