Playing MP3 files on Pi

Wed May 13, 2015 4:46 pm

How can I make Raspberry Pi play music MP3 files I think I need to download additional software. Can I download it on a laptop and then load it into the Raspberry Pi from a flash drive without connecting the Pi to the Internet?

It would save you a ton of trouble to quickly bridge your laptop Internet to your pi, instead of downloading it to a flash drive. You would have to download the deb file, it's dependencies and install all of them with dpkg.
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't.

is there any advantage to installing this, over using the omxplayer which AFAIK, is distributed with raspbian?

yeah. you can't omxplayer * your files but you can mpg123/321 * your files.
unless of course, you don't mind playing one song at a time.

Code: Select all

for track in *.mp3;do omxplayer "$track";done

or you could do that.

I was thinking of this:
Haven't tried it, but may also work.

Code: Select all

find /my/folder -type f | xargs /bin/myExecutable

But its easier to mpg123 *

VLC works good too. Plenty of configuration options, gui playlists, and still lightweight.

sudo apt-get install vlc

Either use VLC or omxplayer for mp3

omxplayer [file]
