"Casting" Youtube videos to the Pi like with a Chromecast

Tue Feb 24, 2015 7:37 pm

Hey dear RPi forum members,

I am currently trying to replace my chromecast with a RPi. The RPi is possible of everything my chromecast did except for one thing:
If a active chromecast is in the network your android device is currently connected to, than a small icon appears in some compatible apps (like youtube) and you can cast the content of the app to your tv. But i haven't found a solution that my RPi can also do that. Do anyone of you know a nice solution for this problem?

I am not aware of any way to 'cast' like you can with a chromecast or firetv. Some people have luck using it with a plex media server or XBMC but I am not aware of any casting that works on the pi, yet.

The Yatse remote for Android can "cast" YouTube videos to a Pi running XBMC/Kodi. Just open the YouTube video on your phone, click the share button, and choose "Send to XBMC"

This also works with local files I believe and maybe a few other things, but not DRMed services like Netflix

Hi guys,

it's been a long time since someone started about Google cast.
What Moessi wants is a button that will appear in supported apps like youtube, so our phones will play youtube videos on Kodi and make use of the auto-play functions etc.

The 'share' option is working, but is not as handy as the Google cast function.

anyone heard of a plugin to support Google cast in Kodi since the starting of this threat?

Cheers

If you have an RPI with Kodi installed. Go to System>Service and enable Zeroconf and UPNP.

Then on an Android tablet you can install Yatse and when using the default Youtube app if you click the share button it will give you the option to send it to Kodi via Yatse. Or in Google Chrome you can install the 'Play on Kodi' addon and cast it to Kodi that way.
