Wait, that was 7 x 9. And the sums still don't match with hex. But the 1A....thing is hex?

It was meant to be 6*9, it is not hex. It is a binary string in base x.
6x*9x=42x
It only works for folks who know the joke from THHGTTG when Arthur Dent pulls out the scrabble letters and comes up with a maths problem that has the "wrong" answer. I bet they took that out of the film because it was too complex for a dumbed down audience (they took all the other funny bits out to make a c**p film) the books, radio & TV series were better.

It's a long time since I watched the movie (a day when I vowed never to watch it again). I'm so pleased I didn't pay to see it at the cinema.

The restaurant at the end of the universe is one of the main features! I still can't picture the dolphins there though - I picture the restaurant as a floating block, with the car-park next to it, and the dolphin-holes almost as warp holes

Not a ceaser cipher.

Here's another one:

Well, vinegar is what we call it in computing. It's not really called vinegar, it's the vine**** ******., first invented by a frenchman. The key word here is raspberry (probably not the key word you are expecting ;-)
