Re: Merchandise ideas

Tue Aug 09, 2011 7:12 pm

Once the logo is finalised in October, I'm going to be organising some merchandise. I know people here have mentioned umbrellas (inevitable for British companies) and the obvious T-shirts; I have been thinking about mugs and possibly pens too, if there's demand. I've got a couple of suppliers lined up to ask for quotes - no, we are not going with Cafe Press. There are lots of other options too - all kinds of stationery, from rubbers (erasers in American) to rulers; stickers; coasters; posters - the world is our oyster!

David Braben bobblehead dolls are probably not going to happen.

What merchandise would you like to see? What would you use specifically for geeking out at home, and what would you wear proudly in public or display in the office? And how many of you would wear a raspberry-colour t-shirt?

yes be careful with that one. you shoudl have seen the looks i got when i first came to the states and asked for a rubber in the stationary store and told them that when you start school in britain they give you a really big one that you write your name and address on and it has to last you at least the whole school year.

Hats are nice, maybe a usb drive with the logo? And of course the T-shirt... but it'd need one of the witty solgans (sic) we've been throwing around :P

We'll be selling peripherals of all kinds on the site, and I'm pretty keen on them having at least a transfer or sticker of the logo on them. And, of course, I am taking notes on the wittier of the solgans (sic).

I'd love to get my hands on some data on how many people actually use the Apple sticker that comes in the box whenever you buy an Apple product. I must have thrown about five of those things away.

Nice fleece with a small, subtle stiched raspberry pi logo on the breast and back of the collar.
808 keyfob camera.
Velcro cable ties
For nostalgia, heat sensitive liquid crystal mousepad (it was one of the all-time most popular Acorn merchandise items)
Raspberry Pi "IT crowd" teddy bear.

Lovely ideas - but I think Eben's head is quite big enough already, thanks!

Cable ties are a brilliant idea which hadn't occurred to me. See? This is why we have a forum. ;) And I shall add fleeces to the other clothing ideas. I wonder whether a Raspberry Pi pyjama set would be overdoing things...

I *really* like the liquid crystal mousepad idea. I had a little heat-sensitive liquid crystal badge from the Science Museum when I was a kid; loved that thing. I wonder what happened to it. And I wonder where I can get something like that manufactured - I'll definitely look into it.

There was an ad for jobs in the Royal Navy in the UK a couple of years ago (pre-IT Crowd), where the IT guy in charge of a nuclear sub advocated "turning it offanonagain". I do not think it was meant to be a joke.

First of all Liz a box of "rubbers" sent to the good old USA might give the wrong impression!

I think a pocket T-shirt with a raspi logo on the pocket, and on the back "Has anyone seen my Damn Computer" with a picture of ukscone's mouse underneath, sitting on the actual raspi!

Maybe some 3rd party company will step up to the mark and start offering David, Eben, Liz, Gert, Jack, Rob, Pete and Alan bobbleheads? (have I missed anyone?) I can see them becoming collector's items in years to come.

A raspberry coloured Pi shaped paperweight, two sizes, capital and lowercase
A Raspberry Pi - USB memory stick with the logo on it obviously :)

Mr_Navigator - Bwahaha!

And those talking about quality have a very good point - I've lost count of the number of t-shirts I've bought online that have been made out of something resembling tissue paper. And a lot are very short in the body. I'll be sourcing from flesh-and-blood suppliers so I can actually look at and feel the things (and possibly stick them through the washing machine to see how they behave) before we get them printed.

Yea, promotional underwear is underdone. Strange, really when you consider that branded underwear is the height of fashion.

Ooh, new strap line:
