Re: What are your plans for no-forum-Wednesday?

As you've probably seen, we're switching the whole site over to a static page tomorrow so we can deal with the inevitable stampede without the servers catching fire. I'll turn it back on when the rush has died down, hopefully in the evening some time.

How do you plan to spend your day in the absence of a forum full of people demanding shipping costs?

stare forlornly at the static page

I will probably do a bit of housework, a little bit of cooking, some reading, catchup on whitechapel and maybe play in the snow if we actually get any here (it's 25% that it'll snow in the city but fingers crossed)

Slightly off-topic. Can you be off-topic in an OT forum?

What message will we get when we try to browse the forum? I suggest something like...

Fatal error, invalid date: 29/02/2012 does not exist

Well there is one particular task I hope to do…

The rest of the day will "hopefully" be spent being very happy!

(I wish!)

...I'll probably continue with the Easy GPIO tutorials in the wiki, fortunately that should be live still.

Well, at about 6:15, I'll go back to bed and have a nap until 7am.

Then I'm afraid it'll have to be a more productive day than of late!

Hey,

Why don't you just put the whole site behind cloudflare?

It would speed up things by caching requests and also by distributing the site to users using its content delivery network. It would also stop users from using scripts that poll the site every x seconds. The server would hardly be under load at all if you put the static site behind cloudflare because cloudflare can cache static pages and serve it to users without connecting to the server. Cloudflare also has a wordpress plugin which can really help speed things up, I think it also optimizes the db.

I think your server would also cope much better if you installed varnish cache (if its running linux) and optimized mysql (if you haven't done so already). You could also consider offloading the MYSQL database, that would really speed things up.

Just a few words of advice because I'm used to running sites on a low end VPS with 128mb ram which require loads of optimization.

School until 4:30, then I will do homework, and then I will periodically refresh the Raspi twitter page while coding educational thingies. =)

Why, repeatedly hitting F5 on the shop to see if the second batch is ready yet, of course!

I shall mainly be overzealously sycophantic. Apparently.

Alternatively, I shall be waiting for Liz to buy me a beer. (Not that she doesn't stand her rounds - it's just I will be waiting all day until the pub opens)

If you're not careful, you'll get a hug alongside your beer. I think you're owed rather more than a single pint.

I shall spend the day attempting to debug someone elses design by putting more debug capability in my design, respinning it through the FPGA, squishing the resulting timing issues and then rerunning the debug (can you detect an element of annoyance here ?).

Lunch time wil be spent eating soup and an apple and maybe, dare I say it reading a book.

You really want to know the life of an ICT teacher...

first thing: taking year 11 school photos

first lesson: year 10 writing up their gcse database task (boring!)

second lesson: year 12 geeks (they really are, it's great!) testing their computing coursework (this is fun fun; they're showing the python code they've been writing for 3 months is correct and works which mostly it does)

lunch: helping my year 11 catch up on missing coursework

after lunch: year 8 being free range around school filming adverts (manic)

last lesson: year 11 finishing their gcse DTP coursework task and writing that up. (yawn)

Oh, what a fun day!  But at least it's planned so I can wake up early and see what you have to say at 6 and then get back to sleep for a couple of hours.

p.s.  Will I be able to order 2 model A Raspberry Pis and do you accept paypal as a method of payment.

p.p.s Will you get a beefier server to cope with all the load?

Steve - The first batch will be all Model B (its easier to deal with one type for the initial manic first day of sale).  As demand and production begin to smooth out, Model As will come on stream. I'm sure the Foundation will tell us all sorts of things once the cats out of the bag!  The sales server is a completely different, commercial grade entity. We're told it will cope.  And when the first Pi's are streaming out of the door, there is the possibility that the forum may be revamped.

phew!

Now MY question.

When is the static page here going live?

Only model Bs in this batch, only one unit per person until demand starts to level, PayPal fine, and the shop is on totally different and far beefier servers.

Sigh, either my implied sarcasm wasn't understood or people are just used to hitting "read the faq" or answering the repeated questions.  For the record the means I wasn't serious in asking...

I'll get my coat.

I've been on humour bypass since the beginning of the week as it is, and the horror of a days ICT was just the cherry on top. Added to which all smileys look the same at this time of night!

Ah; I"m normally better about such things, but I took your winky as a "no offence" to the poor beef-deficient server, rather than applying to the questions as a whole

And yes, if my spectator"s view of this project has taught me anything, it"s that there"s no Q so FA"d that it won"t be FA"d again (and you can substitute whatever you like for the second F).
