Linux Laptop Desktop Recommendation

Fri Jan 25, 2013 2:30 am

Hi R.PI community, first post here and I'm interested in expanding my knowledge of Linux to a Laptop or Desktop. I plan on using the Debian distro for more web and application programming.

I am looking for a Laptop that is under 700.00 USD that welcomes Linux. (Pref. I7, 8+ gb of ram)

Or a desktop that is under 800.00 USD (I7, 8gb of ram)

I appreciate all recommendations regardless of the price / specs etc...

Thank you in advance! :)

As far as laptops go, you can't go wrong with a Thinkpad.

Almost all Thinkpads are documented here.

I'm running a T410 myself, which is an i5 8GB spec so it's not what you're looking for, but it has been solidly supported since I picked it up in August 2010.

I've also used a T41, T42 and T61 with great success before that.

I think the general rule of thumb as far as finding well supported Linux laptops is to go with something heavily Intel based.
