This forum is insane

It's not a criticism, just an observation, and possibly testament to how popular Pi is now.

I run two home machines(desktop and Laptop) on Arch, and a VPS on Debian. Since I joined the Pi world, I also have Raspbian. I'm a member of the Arch forums, the Debian forums, and here of course. And I tend to visit all (well, less so Debian) on a daily basis. usually in the evening after work.

The Arch forums will usually have around two pages of new posts (sometimes three), and the Debian forums, maybe three or four. Then I come here, to 10, 15 or 20.

How the hell do you guys keep up?

I start by working through the subset of forums (fora?) that have no interest for me marking all topics read (that's bare metal, device tree, any media player stuff, graphics and multi media, graphics programming, AIY, Arch and Scratch).

I'll take a quick look at the foreign languages (sometimes a French question gets an answer). Then mark all read.

I'll then look at WinIoT, but usually mark those all read.

I then work through the unread posts list (starting at the last page) opening each thread in a new tab. Some tabs get an instant close because I'm bored with the topic, or it's things like "improved forked daapd" which has no interest for me.

Then I work on each unread post from the oldest to the newest.

Today I'd had a couple of busy days working on-site an hour away from home so I marked the whole forum read.

I'm retired. I just periodically look over a few forums which are likely to have threads I can meaningfully contribute to or cover topics I'm actively interested in. It stay down to a manageable load.

Me too - with the annoyance (or benefit) that it only collects 15 posts at a time so I miss quite a few but tend to pick up on more active threads or postings during quiet hours.

It makes you wonder what equipment they run this forum on.
Sometimes it is so busy I cannot get on.

Daily clicking on new posts and "your" posts I find is the easiest, miss a few days and it is search time
Most people only have a few specific interests.
New users need to search for answer, ditto for old users.
Some old stuff is no longer relevant, new version of OS fixes things (sometimes breaks things too).

Ditto on the New Posts buton - it's how I do my moderating, only by looking at new posts.

I look though my "Your posts" first
then new posts
any sub forums I'm not interested in or cannot answer gets a open / mark all read
then new posts
open a few in new windows and work though those
then do a new posts when closed
OK so I'll miss loads but what is answered gets answered [mostly]

"New posts" for me too. I scan down to see if there's anything interesting or potentially relevant to me and, if not, on to the next page. How many pages I may go through varies. It usually only takes a few minutes.

And "Your posts" to see if there's any further contribution required for something I have already contributed to or may even have started.

I also keep an eye on the Raspberry Pi Blog, MagPi and use Google News for Pi related information.

There are a huge number of posts to the forum and that's not surprising. It's not a requirement to keep up with everything, and it's probably foolish to try. It's more a matter of filtering out what is 'noise' from the rest, getting better at being able to determine what may be interesting and useful to you and that which is not so much.

Typical morning, today, 135 unread posts across the whole forum, so I open six tabs, 25 to a tab.
I ignore the ones I don't understand (Скрипт часов для матрицы max7219), the ones about stuff I have no interest in (How do I build a Pi Multicomputer?),and the ones I definitely don't know the answer (anything in C/C++)
The rest get divided into (a) I have no idea, but would like to know the answer, (b) think I know an answer, but not sure, and (c) I've already answered.
Then everything gets marked as read.
And a quick coffee, before closer scrutiny.

If I think I've got an answer, I'll write a couple of drafts to see if I can phrase it succinctly so it makes sense. Most times I can't, so I'll forget it.
I'll see if anyone else has answered. Most times they have, So I'll forget it.

Then another coffee.

If all else fails, I'll submit it.

Quite often, for those in group (c), I find I wish I hadn't joined in the conversation, but it's too late by then.

It keeps me busy and off the streets, so you're doing society a favour.

It would be nice if the topic title could be changed to read "These forums are quite busy".

The misuse of "insane" isn't really any more acceptable than the misuse of "gay".

Insane and Certifiable is very apt for me.

I pop in and out depending on work / home commitments, but several pages of new posts daily it is hard to keep up to date.

I'm being allowed out in public. I must have been on best behaviour recently.

They let me out to work on a mainframe audit in the UK (not far from home) this week.
They're flying me to Japan for skiing and sightseeing next week and the week after.
They're flying me to New Jersey for another week on a mainframe audit on the 23rd.

My keeper is getting left behind for a couple of those four weeks.

The use of "insane" is only perjorative if you read the Daily Mail and suffer from excessive political correctness. On here it's being used with the chiefly American definition of "shocking; outrageous." as in "they were making insane amounts of money". Anyone who reads the Daily Mail (for any reason, even by finding a copy on a Virgin Train) is the other definition of insane and should be detained under section 2 or 3 of the Mental Health Act.

I visit quite often, use the New Posts, scan the titles for anything interesting.

If I've been away a while, (days/weeks), I'll only go through about 10 pages, & then mark all as read, ready for my next visit.
