[vent]the idiots of the school my sister and i go to have decided to give every new student an ipad, which is a stupid investment at itself, but now my sisters ipad broke and she cant even make her homework anymore, she didn't get a replacement ipad, or real books, but what bothers me even more is that they could have gone with way cheaper android tabs, that could be updated, would actually make the investment worth it, and that wouldn't need to be jailbroken and what else the school is doing. the hallways also get a lot more boring every year, as more and more students are doing nothing but staring at the light emmiting planks that are in their hands. whats the goddamn benefit of ipads opposed to books anyway? a recent study even shows that people reading from paper are better at remembering what they read. Careful with the language, Eugene*, even here.

I bought a child's Latin primer on Kindle, thinking it would be fun to get a grounding in the language. It was totally useless. Each chapter started with a Latin text and then a couple of pages later there would be a table of words. The rest of the chapter continually referred back to both. With a paper book you would just put a finger on each page and flip back and forth but on Kindle it becomes a nightmare.

And that is before we get onto such things as graphs, which are invariable illegible.

It would be possible to make reference books work in etext, but I have doubts that the work has been done. More likely the nice salesman from Apple took the school's board to have an expensive lunch and offered huge discounts and incentives.

@noob
"light emitting plank", I love that phrase and will try and push it into wider circulation.

People who send me PMs suggesting I look at their thread because they think I will have something to contribute......

It's less disturbing if it's a thread that you've already contributed to, but in many cases the folks sending that PM would do better to reply to their own thread to clarify their needs or actually answer some of the questions they've been posed by the forum regulars.

I can only assume that Chritmas Spirit is stopping people from reading previous posts in threads before typing a reply that has already been made....

I wish people would read what has already been posted instead of just posting the same response as has already been given.

What sucks? Winter drivers. Some time around the late Autumn, when it's dark at the evening rush hour, people seem to lose their ability to drive and see at the same time. I assume it's not malice, as it doesn't seem to be any specific subspecies of motorists responsible... :?

Be careful out there!

Sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

Or if you have a receipt ask the vendor if they will cancel the order and take their goods back. (In the UK the distant selling laws mean you can ALWAYS do that within seven days.)

If you are referring to a recent thread where the Subject is a near-spelling of 'HELP' it might be wrong to accuse the Mods of deleting a flippant reply. I was 'guilty' of such a reply, but after sleeping on it decided it didn't help or move the issue forward so I deleted it myself. (I have in the past unwittingly started a flame war and come in for personal abuse - I don't want to go there again.)

You know what sucks?
Taking a device apart, doing whatever repair you were doing and then putting it all back together.
TO ONLY NOTICE THAT ONE SCREW SAT THERE, ON YOUR DESK JUST LAUGHING AT YOU :x
Cleaned out my laptop earlier, put it all back together and noticed a single screw that I hadn't put back.
I am amazed at what can be done by such a small and cheap device!

Just the one?

My father-in-law's Xerox went belly-up. Took it apart to remove the melted remains of a plastic bag gumming up the works. Reassempled, tested, returned to father-in-law.
Now what do I do with the sixteen screws still on the kitchen table?

Dont worry, that screw was never part of the device. It arrived by the same means half used biros and odd socks vanish.
