Re: Is a new Raspberry Pi model coming?

I think 'asv25' did a good job collating the various rumours together, though I suspect a couple refer to other things. I hadn't really paid much attention to teh few I had seen.

I am surprised no one's had a go at guessing what the full #PI... hashtag is on the MagPi 40 cover. PiWars is what jumps to mind, perhaps something to do with the CamJam Edukit which I think someone earlier mentioned.

Jamesh's comment was one which had caught my eye that MagPi were coming up with something, and suggested something longer term than a one off promotion / freebie.

The problem with building up excitement is it ends as either a great disappointment or people being aggrieved at having missed out. Hopefully neither will be the case.

I guess I have to skip the golden oldie; "Free Nelson Mandela".

Free camera? The price has dropped quite a bit recently... I guess a new sensor may be on the horizon and it's time to offload the old stock ;)
WTF, seriously?

Hm. £8 for a camera module. News to me, at any rate. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/video-modules/7757731/

Must be the start of a series containing plans for a Raspberry Pi - powered DeLorean time machine.
Which implies the simultaneous announcement of a Pi 2B+ with built-in RTC.

It is good marketing, we're all intrigued ;)

That's another thing. I was thinking about this thread while I was at work. Some of the comments yesterday did seem a bit negative. I'm not saying that this was intentional. It's just how they appeared. And I was thinking that's why they invented emojis.

At the time, that looked like it could have just referred to more people buying the MagPi having got a Pi for Christmas. I hadn't seen any other hype for the December edition at that time.

I never noticed anything either. It's good marketing thou they should have dropped more hints.

Since they're making us Yanks and other More Western Hemispherers stay up past midnight, and we are therefore probably going to find something to eat and get wet, just because you're never supposed to do that to Gremlins, and due to Murphy's Law, I'm going to start speculating on what the announcement _isn't_ about:

1. It's not a Pi 3. Broadcom would have to produce an entirely new SoC in order to deliver anything significant beyond the Pi 2B's features, and that hasn't been announced for any of their customers' products, which would likely be necessary to trickle down to a really new Pi. So:
- no SATA
- no USB 3.0
- no Gigabit Ethernet
- no on-SoC support for multiple parallel USB/Ethernet channels
- no Ultra High Speed (UHS) 1.8v microSD card mode
- no optical transceiver
- no clock speed increase
- no TARDIS
- no Transmogrifier
- no sandwich
- no wheels
...

2. It's not a CM2:
- The CM has 4 GB of NAND flash RAM onboard and Jessbian (Raspbian Jessie) won't fit into that, and going to 8 GB is going to be even more expensive
- No one really produced the hoped-for Pi laptop/tablet using the CM, and they're clearing out the CM and I/O development board at half-off prices, so no more I/O board, at least not in its current configuration for the CM
- If a CM2 is not pin-compatible with the CM, it's going to be DOA. Few did any development with the CM, and almost no one would do anything with a CM2 that's incompatible and more expensive than the CM
- There are no products ready for a CM2 as far as we know, and the Foundation has been legendary about not seeding anyone with new designs in advance for fear of drying up sales of existing products, and rightly so (see also The Osborne Effect)

3. It's not a 2A:
- The cost of the A+ follow-on cannot increase and having a 2A with 256 MB of RAM would be ridiculous
- A 2A would use more power than an A+ and that's anathema to the raison d'être for the low-power A/A+ that's meant to be more battery friendly
- A 2A would siphon off production of BCM-2836s that have all been going into 2Bs for over a year now, with no slack in demand in sight - in fact, educational institutions are just now beginning to buy Pii in bulk in meaningful quantities

4. It's not going to have the same amount of DRAM as any existing Pi:
- The only way is up for DRAM because the existing software has been tweaked about as far as it's going to go for the current SoCs, modulo a few things the Foundation has been funding, such as the open X stack
- Supplies of 256 MB DRAM have been drying up for the A+, and somethings got to give if they're still about 20% of the Pi production

5. It's not going to be a new camera:
- The Foundation-impiied projected run-out of the existing stock of sensors is closer to Spring 2016 than Fall 2015
- A new sensor is going to require new driver software and there hasn't been any discussion about that, while that was extensively discussed before the Original Flavor camera module was released

6. It's not going to be a free print version of the MagPi:
- Magazines are getting more expensive and ad-laden than ever
- The trees aren't planting themselves for replacement
- The trees need still-pretty expensive petroleum-based fertilizer

7. It's not going to be a more expensive version of an existing model:
- That would be anathema to everything the Foundation has done

8. IT IS GOING TO BE THE FIVE DOLLAR PI ZERO!!!
- BCM-2835 1 GHz single-core CPU with VideoCore IV GPU
- 512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM
- A micro-SD card slot
- A mini-HDMI socket for 1080p60 video output
- Micro-USB sockets for data and power
- An unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header
- Identical pinout to Model A+/B+/2B
- An unpopulated composite video header
- The smallest-ever form factor at 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

HAPPY DAY, TURKEYS!!!

Well sort of, it is not "NEW" it is a redesign of the A+........................in a smaller form factor with peripherals removed

Yes, he needs an apology for the nasty words some in this thread wrote.

Poppycock 'redesign'. Its a new Pi. Every Pi is a sort of redesign. And it is welcome!
