Recover Disk-Imaged Hard Drive

Thu May 07, 2015 2:19 am

Hi all,

A total beginner here. Just did a terrible mistake.

I accidentally disk-imaged Raspbian into my 500GB hard disk drive.

Is this considered my hard disk formatted? So how can I recover my files?

For your sake, I hope you have backups of your data.

The first 3 Gbyte or so of files on your disk are gone forever. The remainder are still on the drive but the "directions" for an OS to find all their constituents and piece them together are also gone. Utilities may be able to recover some.

The first few GBs will (probably) be the EFI partition (usually default with windows 8 or newer), and one or two windows partitions, and hopefully they would be big enough to prevent any damage to the NTFS partition. So, you can probably recover the files, however everything that allows a computer to determine what the disk type is, how big it is, disk parameters etc, is gone. If you really want to recover your files, take it to someone that specialises in data recovery. My hard drive has the windows recovery partition after the NTFS one (ie: drive C:), and so you can maybe recover your windows installation from there (or from an installation CD).
I'm happy to help.
