Can I use Pi-Top OS without Pi-top Hardware

Tue Apr 09, 2019 3:16 pm

Can I use the Pi-top OS without the Pi-Top hardware without legal implications? I intend to use it for my students but the hardware looks pricey.

Welcome to the Raspberry Pi forums.

I am only another user here, and do not speak for or on behalf of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

But it seems to me that the PiTop Operating System is a third-party product unrelated to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, so perhaps questions should be directed to that third-party?

I know but, I see a lot of Pi-top questions here. Also, they don't seem to respond on their support page. Someone already asked something similar for a couple of years now and up until no response. That's why I decided to inquire here

The bit that puts me off from using it is:
Customer shall make its software platform design and other documentation available to pi-top for review at all times.

I presume Pi Top is using mostly Free and Open Source software.

Of course they will have some secret stuff in the cloud to lock you in to their service.

Best to avoid such things.

Seeing as pi-topOS is based on raspbian

and as you will not be using any of the extra hardware included with a pi-top, you may just as well use raspbian and just add any specific software , you might want to use that are included in the pi-top version.

ceed I see nothing that should prevent one from running Polaris on a Pi.

CEED Universe install explains how to install the CEED Universe on a Pi. Even the Inventors Kit can be used with the Pi.

You can even download in a PDF format the additional cutouts to use in the games included as part of CEED. CEED is a unified learning system that works with the the various PI-Top accessories, most compatible with the Pi, in addition to the Polaris OS.

Why would you want to use the PiTop OS instead of Raspbian?
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,

The included learning system of programming and electronics. The computers can include a breadboard area for prototyping in a ore unified system than just a Pi and a breadboard. It might make an easier sell to some school boards or school decision makers.

I suspected as much but I just wanted to be double-sure. But I just looked through this in their legal terms.

This licence grant includes all updates, upgrades, new versions and replacement software for your use in connection with the pi-top Services. If you do not comply with the documentation and any other requirements provided by pi-top, then you will be liable for all resulting damages suffered by you and third parties. Unless otherwise provided by applicable law, you agree not to alter, reproduce, adapt, distribute, display, publish, reverse engineer, translate, disassemble, decompile or otherwise attempt to create any source code that is derived from the Software. I saw no need for this OS on the Pi-Top I bought for my young grandchildren and replaced it with Raspbian. The only difficulty I've had is that the optional speaker doesn't work with raw Raspbian, because it uses I2C which I don't know much about.

I wouldn't bother with Pi-Top OS, just use Raspbian from the Rasberry Pi website. Pi-Top is just Raspbian with some extra software to run the Pi-Top hardware. Also the Pi-Top desktop software doesn't work properly, on my CEED I disabled it and just boot to the standard Raspbian desktop.

The links above for the Pi-Top speaker help, mine works fine, although sometimes updates mess it up.

As for CEED Universe, never got it to run

Just a reminder of the question that the OP asked:

Can I use the Pi-top OS without the Pi-Top hardware without legal implications?

Not "should I run some other OS on my PiTop hardware?"

Not "what are the benefits of running Raspbian instead of the Pi-top OS?" (Or vice-versa.)

Yes you can. The Polaris OS is Raspbian with some additional software and different repositories. You can search the RPF repositories for Pi-Top and there will be a return item that can be installed. There is a reason that Polaris is freely downloadable and uses the GPL licensing.

Pi-Top Polaris runs Raspbian and is just a series of packages to replace the GUI desktop to support Pi-top products. Just search for "Pi-Top" in the raspbian depositories. I have even swaped SD cards between the Pi-Top laptop and a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with no issues on both systems. The uname -a command show raspbian as the OS.

The results on a pi-top for 'uname -a' and 'cat /usr/lib/os-release':

Code: Select all

pi@pi-top:/
pi@pi-top:/ $ uname -a
Linux pi-top 4.19.42-v7+ #1219 SMP Tue May 14 21:20:58 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux
pi@pi-top:/
pi@pi-top:/ $ cat /usr/lib/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="9"
VERSION="9 (stretch)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian
HOME_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianForums"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianBugs"
pi@pi-top:/ $
And the first couple of lines from raspinfo<;

Code: Select all

System Information
------------------

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="9"
VERSION="9 (stretch)"

Linux pi-top 4.19.42-v7+ #1219 SMP Tue May 14 21:20:58 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux
Hardware	: BCM2835
Revision	: a020d3
Serial          : ###############
Throttled flag  : throttled=0x0
Camera          : supported=0 detected=0
So I would conclude that the pi-top is using Raspbian as the base for it's product. Also some of the Raspbian repositories are used for updating pi-top's software.
