The version of Ubuntu Mate that can be downloaded from https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/ is not compatible with your RPi Model 3B+.

If you can't figure out how to do it, I made images of Ubuntu Mate ready for Raspberry Pi 3B+

@MaxVMH Thank you for posting your Ubuntu disc image. Can I ask why it's so large? Over 7 GB? Just curious what I would be installing. I too want Ubuntu on a Pi 3 B+. Cheers!

That's the size of the flash drive I used to make the image, I didn't shrink the image afterwards - so it's basically 4GB 'space' on top of Ubuntu Mate, nothing to be worried about ;)

Consider dropping a note on the Ubuntu MATE forums for official support - that way they know there's demand 8-)

I downloaded your SD care file for 3B+ from the torrent link above. It loads fine on a 3B card but not on my 3B+.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000004 ... on first line.

Later:Hardware name BCM2708

Any help?

The torrent should still work but I stopped hosting the files. Ubuntu Mate 18.04 and 18.10 were released and I feel it would be of more use to the overall community if people asked for images on their forums or contributed to an official release instead of relying on old hacked together images of a distro that is over 2 years old.

https://ubuntu-mate.community

Alternatively, you can try making your own image based on Ubuntu Mate 16.04:

Copy the following files from Raspbian to Ubuntu Mate:
For Booting: copy bootcode.bin, fixup.dat, fixup_x.dat , start.elf, start_x.elf, bcm2710-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb and kernel7.img
For keyboard/mouse: copy /lib/modules/4.9.80-v7+ (root partition)
For network: copy the contents of /lib/firmware/brcm/ (root partition)

If you want to boot from USB:
edit cmdline.txt, change root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to root=/dev/sda2 (boot partition)
edit etc/fstab, change/dev/mmcblk0p2 to sda2 and /dev/mmcblk0p1 to sda1 (root partition)

Bonus
After your first boot, enable wifi:

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock wifi
And then reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo reboot
