BBC Basic Manual?

Tue Jul 30, 2013 3:54 am

Does anybody know where I can find a copy of the BBC Basic manual that would be most appropriate for using with the Basic provided with the Raspberry Pi RISC OS download?

I always seem to end up with links to the following, but it's a dead link:

http://foundation.riscos.com/Private/manuals/BASIC/

I didn't see anything on the SD card, did I just miss it?

Thanks,
Keith

You can buy one (printed) from CJE Micros - something around £30 if they have any left.

Alternatively you can buy the DDE from ROOL http://www.riscosopen.org/content/sales/dde for £48. This has the 1992 edition of the BBC BASIC Manual in PDF.

There is a CD 'RISC OS Programmer's Reference Manuals in PDF and HTML formats' originally published by RISC OS Limited, which you may find on ebay - this includes the BBC BASIC Manual.

ROL is now defunct but the web site continues to be maintained by Aaron and he intends to make the BBC BASIC Manual available, free, in HTML format in due course.

In the folder Documents.Books you can find a book about BBC BASIC, and the Programmers Reference Manuals.
The link you mentioned is dead for some time now, but i downloaded it when it was available :-)
Drop me a PM if you need it (it's under 2,5MB).

ironwheal - thanks for that link. The wayback machine saves the day. I'm not sure why this isn't included in the SD image, because it's a really nice things to have for RISC OS newcomers.

The web link to the Programmers Reference Manual part 1 does not work, is there another web link for part 1?

You have it in your Risc OS installation somewhere in the Documents folder.

Just navigate a bit from
http://web.archive.org/web/201208190123 ... als/BASIC/
(go up one directory then select PRMs)

I still have the manual which came with my Archimedes. If anyone could keep me straight on copywrite, I could copy it out and send at cost, if that helps.

Although this page on 3QD's site is mainly intended for users of a fork of the operating system that does not run on the Pi, nevertheless the documents shown still have much relevance, in particular the three on BASIC (Index, Chapters and Command Reference):

You can find everything you need documentation wise for developing under RiscOS here (Current as of the date of this post)

http://www.riscos.com/support/developers/index.htm

I can't find them, but there are downloadable PDF versions too for offline reading.

In response to @AshbyLad , please note that Mark Usher now appears to have closed down the BBC Lives web server, so all links to bbc.nvg.org should now be redirected to:

http://archive.retro-kit.co.uk/bbc.nvg.org/

where there is an active mirror.

Update you can download an archived copy of the original RiscOS3 prms as an ISO/CD Image from here:

https://archive.org/details/cdrom-riscos-ro3-prm

This should also include the BBC Basic guides.
