Can't offer any experience with that tool, though.

Ah ok. Hopefully it will not be long until most of the USB issues in RISC OS are resolved. ;)

Raeddie.. so the truth is out there, for a given value.

Installing RiscOS on old 160gb hard drives is not a very bright idea at all. I know - I tried it. It didn't 'feel' right with tiny glitches and stutters. That might well be the clunky old 160gb MSD which has seen better days but until I can afford an SSD I'll boot from the SD card.

Why not use a brand new 160GB HDD?

I didn't know they still Made them DavidS! A 3TB monster of a drive is around £100 and 160gb seems to be £15 to £50 pounds. So, they are not really a bargain. What I'm saving for is an SSD. High hopes! I'm told that even Windows boots quickly from one of those babies. Presently I have a 1tb@fat32 attached with all me Lost in Space and Pinky and the Brain episodes on it! Lol..

Hello,

I am attempting this myself - I use !HForm to format the hard disk - it asks some questions that I wasn't sure about:
Format or Initialise - is the second just a fast format?
Bootable - I guess I should answer yes? :)
I used the defaults for most of the 'number' questions.

I get as far as copying the files over (I guess I'm just opening the SDCard from the pinboard and likewise the newly formatted HD and dragging the contents across?), then rebooting. It waits for a system disk but never finds it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Chris

Under a Pi, you must keep a DOS partition for the boot files.
Under RISC OS, you must tell the system that you'll boot on the SD Card (configure sdfs, configure boot, etc.).

Thanks, yes, I realised there's the FAT partition mounted within !Boot - a bit hard to replicate on my HD!
I fixed and used the SD card to boot, moving all the other files to the HD. The only annoying thing is that the shortcuts don't remain.

Thanks,
Chris

You can't replicate the FAT partition by copying the file present in Boot. You must format a part of the disc with HForm, then create a DOS partition with the rest of the disc under Linux for example. Not an easy task.

It seems that you have a hard disc attached to USB. You'll not be able to boot directly on it, as the DOS partition must be on the SD Card. Good solution is here to put all firmware and kernel things on a SD, then, under RISC OS, to define an hard drive as the boot disc of the system.

Should be : Configure SCSIFS (choose SCSIFS as boot filesystem), Configure Drive 'nb_of_disk' (choose disk number x as boot disc), Opt 'nb-of-disk' 2 (ask the disk x to be bootable).
