New to RISC OS? Be patient.

Tue Sep 01, 2015 8:24 pm

RISC OS has been around for a long time, and its aficionados, such as myself, are getting old. Until the Raspberry Pi came along there were few young people using it. There are no browsers in RISC OS that can cope with CSS apart from NetSurf, and it, as yet, does not have sufficient Javascript to be usable for submitting comments to this forum. I am reduced to using Firefox on a Windows XP notebook to write this. So the Raspberry Pi forum is not a welcoming place for RISC OS users; indeed there are no reasons why it should be, when most Raspberry Pi users will be using Linux.

There is another reason why the RISC OS subsection of this forum is rather quiet, which I hesitate to mention, but which is evident from a glance at the intellectual level of some of its exchanges. Also there seems to be a strain of nostalgia for the BBC B computer and BBC BASIC which tends to swamp discussion of anything else. RISC OS has moved on, after all, but you would hardly guess it from this forum.

I still prefer to use RISC OS for as many tasks as I can, because I have grown used to its UI. I am very grateful for the hard work of the ROOL team in developing RISC OS for various new ARM platforms, in particular for the Raspberry Pi. If you find this forum a disappointing place for information about RISC OS, I would suggest a glance at https://www.riscosopen.org/content/.

Using NetSurf on RISC OS to post this, seems to work ok!

But yes, most RISC OS discussion takes place over on the ROOL forums rather than here: https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/

Bryan.
