Other DE's

Tue Jun 25, 2013 4:53 am

Using a very high overclock and an external drive, Gnome 3.2 is very usable on Raspbian. Is there a way to get Gnome 3 working on Pidora?

It appears to already be installed, but I get "Failed to load session gnome" and then:

Code: Select all

gnome-session[999]: Warning: Unable to find required component 'gnome-panel'
even though gnome-panel is installed.

And why is it pre-installed wasting space for it to not work?

This is a known issue. Xfce is the default desktop in Pidora, not Gnome. But you could install Gnome using yum.

You shoud install a desktop switcher and select neither xfce of gnome:

Code: Select all

# yum install switchdesk switchdesk-gui

# switchdesk xfce

or

# switchdesk gnome

None of that worked. But I was just able to switch my DM to GDM from LightDM using:

Code: Select all

systemctl -f enable gdm.service
By default GDM is masked for some reason.

And apparently gnome-panel isn't installed and I can't install it because it's missing:

Code: Select all

libgnome-desktop-3.so.2
as well as a few other packages. libgnome is already installed but it is version 2.32.1-5

I also see that when trying to install gnome-panel, it tries to take in a mixture of gnome 3.4 packages from Fedora 17, and 3.6 packages from Fedora 18. Is this currently the expected behavior?
