PoE hat, Raspberry Pi 4, not able to power off

Sun Jun 30, 2019 9:25 pm

Is the official PoE hat compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 in all ways including shutting down?

With a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and PoE hat , 'shutdown -h now' powers offs the device and the device stays off. However, with a Raspberry Pi 4 2GB and PoE hat, the device shuts down for a second or so and then starts back up. This has been tested with several Raspberry Pi 3B+ and recent PoE hats, but only one Raspberry Pi 4 2GB.

Thank you

Hi,
Im using an official POE hat on a Pi4 4GB and i have the same problem
Not possible to shutdown the device... not via 'shutdown -h now' or via shutdown in VNC remote
So not sure if this is a software issue in the new release??

Thanks for the help.

Odd, will find a PoE HAT and try this.

OK, have now tried this on a 4GB Pi4. Tested the shutdown with power from USB and from the PoE HAT itself, and it does not start back up in either case.

Are there any idiosyncrasies with the setups that are showing the issue? Have you done an rpi-update to get the latest firmware (backup first!), as I am using very up to date firmware.

Hi,

i just did an rpi update and reboot after that a shutdown command and a shutdown in VNC and it is still restarting...
I will try a clean install asap to see if there is a difference.
and maybe swap the 2 poe hats....

Is there also a firmware update for the POE module itself? if yes, how can I update the POE module firmware? maybe it is the POE module and not the PI ?

What PoE are each of you using. I was looking at going this route for power, but I am waiting to see how this issue goes.
Thanks

Hi jamesh
I just tested a fresh install (full noobs) with all updates (RPI) and it is still rebooting after a shutdown command.
Also i did switch my 2 POE hats (official Pi POE Hats), i switcht the 2 ports on mi switch and i still have the same problem... (not possible to shutdown the Pi)

I would like to test it with a power adaptor but i dont have any USBC adapters at the moment.

Please keep us updated about any solutions.
Thanks
Francois

A POE hat arrived today to go with my Pi4.

I too noticed "sudo shutdown now" and "sudo halt" both perform a reboot.

I also have a Navolabs POE hat. Had I thought at the time, I could've tried to replicate using this, although I can only test on a 3B+, as the Navolabs hat doesn't fit on the new 4B, due to the swapping around of the Ethernet and USB ports.

Raspberry Pi 4 with Buster up-to date as of 5 July 2018 and official POE hat won't stay shut-down. 'sudo halt' and 'sudo shutdown now' both reboot the Pi.

The same MicroSD card, when placed into a Pi 3B+ fitted with a Navolabs POE hat shuts down and stays down. It doesn't reboot.

Swap out the Navolabs POE hat for the Official Raspberry Pi POE hat and the 3B+ also shuts down and doesn't reboot.

Looks like a Pi4 issue. The Pi4 firmware or hardware needs revising or updating.

My Pi4 is running firmware update from this thread:

Hi all,

Following a successful trial with our alpha testers, we are releasing a new firmware build for the USB3 host adapter that should save about 300mW and help the Pi4 to run cooler, which in turn improves performance in compute-intensive tasks.

Download the archive from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PXwrnh ... sp=sharing
With the zip file on the Pi:

Code: Select all

$ unzip vl805_update_0137a8.zip
$ chmod a+x vl805
$ sudo ./vl805 -w vl805_fw_0137a8.bin
$ sudo reboot
The zip file includes the current shipping firmware (013701) in case you want to revert:

Code: Select all

$ sudo ./vl805 -w vl805_fw_013701.bin
$ sudo reboot
By the way, if you run "sudo ./vl805" with no parameters it displays the version of the currently running firmware. Note that this may differ from what's in the EEPROM if you've just reprogrammed it but not rebooted.

Re: PoE hat, Raspberry Pi 4, not able to power off

I'm encountering the same issue with Raspberry Pi 4 model B 2 GB with the official PoE HAT v2. It happens on all four Pis in my bramble, and I can watch them all shut down, stay off for maybe 1-2 seconds, then they all light up as if I had run:

Code: Select all

reboot
instead of:

Code: Select all

shutdown -h now
Downstream issue here: https://github.com/geerlingguy/raspberr ... issues/156

I upgraded the system with:

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
Then I rebooted, and am running the OS from internal microSD cards. I'm using a Netgear GS305P 4-port PoE hub. Never had an issue with the Pi 3 model B+ boards I have been using for a year prior.

Hi

Just got my new Pi4 4GB with also POE HAT (Fresh install).

Same thing. when shutting down (sudo shutdown -r now), it reboots.

I should also add, this happens on all four of my 2GB Pi 4s (have not tried with my 1GB Pi 4 yet). 2 were purchased a week ago at Micro Center, and two came from separate orders from CanaKit. One of the Pis still had a couple little hardware clip things over the camera connector. I’m guessing they are from different batches.

Anyways, I have yet to use a Pi that *doesn’t* reboot itself with a PoE HAT on it.

What issue? You're asking the Pi to reboot and that's exactly what it does...

even sudo shutdown -h now ..??? sudo halt ??? it also reboots.

or using Pi Gui (startx) when you shutdown, it reboots....

You seemed to be surprised that '-r' reboots the system and referred to that as 'the issue'. If not then please phrase your remarks more carefully :roll:
