ETA for Official POE Hat for 3B+

I'm hoping a Pi Engineer can respond with a new timeframe or rough ETA for the release of the POE Hat.

I remember when the Pi 3B+ was officially released they talked about a POE Hat being available possibly in late May.
Right now and since then, the page continues to say "Coming Soon"

Does anyone have a firmer timeline for its availability?

Thanks

There have been production delays, but things are moving forward. I'd love to say what the current estimates are, but I can't think of a single time an estimate has been given and then nothing went wrong. I don't think anybody is at libery to say at this point.

Appreciate the reply. You're killing me though

I was hoping to install project for curling overhead cameras and avoid adding power outlets overhead.

The PoE would allow long inexpensive Ethernet cable runs.
Wanted to get them mounted this summer before they put the curling ice in and using ladders becomes very very tricky

I can imagine how ladders on ice wouldn't' work too well.

Depending on your experience or tolerance for DIY.. another option might be passive POE injectors.. like this one:
http://www.allspectrum.com/store/power- ... -9169.html

Inject 12v or so into the network cable and add a suitable 5v DC-DC converter. I have a UPS setup that folks use those injectors with as well. If you don't already have one, you would not need to buy a real POE switch this way.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check into that.

So you're saying that this option would require neither a PoE hat nor a switch?

I love DIY. Most pi people do. As long as someone has done the steps before I can usually cobble together pieces

There is a 3rd part PoE HAT shipping. See viewtopic.php?p=1313975#p1313587

That looks interesting and I'd be willing to give it a try too but it doesn't seem to allow any of my Canadian shipping addresses from Amazon link.

Was astonished last night when I sat down to read the review of the official PoE Hat in the August issue of Raspberry Pi magazine.

In depth and in hand testing and analysis with 5 star review.

It must be close even with production issues???

It also mentioned the third party Poe addon mentioned above that works with older Pis.

I think that was a different one.

If you are referring to the passive POE option, yes, a POE hat or POE switch is NOT required. What that passive POE adapter is doing is taking a pair or two from the network cable and teeing it off to pass the power. You do loose gigabit Ethernet (100M only) but that is generally not an issue on the Pi. The cable itself drops a little bit of voltage, so you inject more then you need (12v lets say) and use a 5v DC-DC converter at the other end of the line.

Knowing RS that date doesn't mean anything.

Must be getting close.

The org's website just updated the PoE page and added the Product Brief and mechanical drawings

And it puts out a full 2.5A

Nice.
Apart from telling us that the fan is spi-controlled, or at least there's (possibly) access to the spi on a 8-pin header, it also tells us that ETA is before January 2023

Not quite. It's controlled by i2c through the firmware talking to an attiny814 on the board. Although it would be easy to control it manually through i2c-gpio or i2c-vc on the ID EEPROM pins. All that happens is that it writes a pwm value to a specific register.

Too true. My first RPi1B was ordered in August 2012 and delivered in October.

Never buy anything on a back-order from RS.

Thanks for spotting that.
Confirmed that it can be ordered and shipped to Canada
Probably 10 days shipping but reasonable cost
