The Farnell kit has black jumpers too :) I just looked.

Someone else was asking about the buttons. They look just like the ones in the manual. Farnell part # 2133929. Without opening the packet, they look as if they will fit the holes just fine. :)

I had quick look at the datasheet and I think you're probably right. They're 7.4mm, which sees an odd size - most of the ones I've seen are either 6mm or 12mm. Could this be the component that the Farnell kits have been waiting for?

I think that may well be the case as the switches are shown as new on the Farnell site so I exepect they had to get them in specially for the Gertboard kits. Virtually all tactile switches have a standard 6mm/12mm footprint and we searched high and low to find some that would fit the unusual size Gert has selected on the Gertboard without sucess. But then Farnell had the advantage of being told by Gert what the exact part he had used, where as we had to work from the information publicly available.

The above shouldn't worry anyone: the buttons provided by Tandy are pretty easily manipulated to fit the board. Just some gentle pressure needed to spread the legs. (Cough.)

They weren't very difficult to do - agreed. Had to be slightly careful to solder them well as the legs didn't protrude very far through the holes.


And on another note, I just noticed two loose ground pins on my original Gertboard. That's just a question of inadequate soldering. ;) Actually, my 18 Watt iron couldn't melt the unleaded solder when trying to redo the ground on RWPR, so I resorted to leaded for that one point. The other loose one was the GND next to AD1, which eventually flowed with long persistence. :)

Well, I assembled my Farnell board last night, took about two and half hours. I've not done anything like this before (other than some very basic soildering in the last few weeks of getting my pi) but it was really straight forward so don't be put off if you have not done it before. Was really very enjoyable.
The surface mounted components took a steady hand but if you make a mistake you can simple remove the solider and try again if need be. Also bending the pins on the Atmel took a couple of attempts to get it right but a little patience is all thats required. Here is a picture http://www.marksbits.co.uk/Raspi/2012/1 ... assembled/

My kit arrived yesterday, all looks fine with the bags of components.
First thing I noticed was the quality of the PCB. Very impressed. The pcb is very well produced.
Wont be starting to assemble it until the weekend, that way I can do it in daylight. I find close work much easier under natural light than a desk lamp etc.
Once the SMDs are fitted it should be fairly easy to finish off (Famous last words :lol: )
Will post a photo once its completed

Also I will replace the standard IC sockets with Turned Pin type.

Assembly tip:
Try to use a clean place where you can find an SMD component if it happens to 'jump' away.
Bad place: Small table on high pole carpet.
Good place: Clean kitchen with white non-carpet* floor.

Kit arrived, just spent over 2 hours putting it all together. The surface mounts did give me a couple problems; it's very easy to use too much or too little solder, but I got there in the end. The bags from Farnell were not clearly labelled, so you have to look for the stock number and then see what the value was for the component (flicking through pages in the assembly guide).

Now to spend the next few days getting the board to sing and dance - preferably without blue smoke and mirrors.

Also, another word of advice, be careful when trimming the header pins - they have a habit of pinging off into the ether, so hold both sides; remember to sand down and rough edges after trimming, otherwise some of the pins won't line up. Many thanks go to Gert for designing and documenting this board.

Talking about the voice of experience... No matter how expensive the carpet is, don't try to catch a soldering iron.

I have seen carpet in a kitchen several times.

o Tent to catch flying parts
o Respirator (for lead fumes) - We will be in a tent.
o Magnification Thing (lamp/headset)
o Good lighting
o Tweezers
o Decent Soldering Iron with small tip
o Solder
o Tip cleaning tool
o Dark surface (wood etc)
o No carpet (even in the kitchen)
o Jump away when you drop the Iron
o Teach 23yo son to solder and have him do it.

Post-assembly voltage question:

Assembled, but the voltages at the regulator are out of whack and I have therefor not installed the jumper to feed the board itself.

RPI 5V in : 4V8
RPI 3V3 in: 3V3

Regulator out : 4V3

Is this just a 'no load' issue, or have I gone and messed something up ?

Received my Gertboard yesterday from Tandy - I cancelled my order with Farnell after getting fed up with waiting.

First off - 3 sets of thanks: 1) Thanks to Gert for all the effort he has put into designing this expansion board and getting it produced, as well as the excellent user and assembly manuals; 2) Thanks to Gordon of Drogon Systems for all his contributions -especially the ATMega setup; 3) Thanks to Tandy for getting a Gertboard to my door!

I spent a couple of hours this evening assembling my board - I have done a bit of soldering before so I was not too daunted by it (although i have not done much surface mount stuff before). A pair of fine bent-nose tweezers really helped with the surface mount stuff - I got a set of eBay for less than £5 here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290773349864. I am using a Antex XS25 soldering iron with the standard bit; I purchased a 0.5 needle bit, but it kept going black and refused to tin, so I have not used it.

So - does it work! Yes (mostly)! I was a bit worried when the LEDs randomly turned on/off whenever I touched (or even got near!) the header pins for the buffers, but I see from this thread and re-reading the manual that some of the buffer chips are quite sensitive and this is normal when their inputs are floating (mine are SN74AC244N by the way).

I have tested the ATMega with the Blink program and it is faithfully flashing an LED once a second. Hurrah! The DtoA is working, but have not tested much else yet.

Oddly, LEDs D1 and D12 are not working....I am 99% sure the polarity is correct, but I will need to check....odd. :?: Has anyone else had this problem?

Looking forward to spending some time experimenting with my new board now! :geek:

I made the mistake of putting the LEDs the wrong way round because I was in a bit of rush and didn't follow the instructions. I assumed the white line on the PCB was the cathode (flat edge) but it isn't. I'm not sure what that line is supposed to mean.

Good, it wasn't just me then! :D

I even had the manual up on the screen at the time but my wife was on her way back from a school re-union and trains weren't working (shock! horror!) so I was mostly using the PC for looking up alternative routes and revised timetables. So, all her fault then :mrgreen:

Looked at the board and thought "flat bit" with a "minus". What could possibly go wrong? :lol:

Mine now has nice green leds since I only had enough of the right size in that colour. I still have other problems with the board - but learning how to diagnose and fix this stuff is all part of the "fun" of it to me. I was never interested in anything practical (it's been software only for me until now and I'm pushing 50). Until I got my first Pi. I'm now knee deep in all kinds of discrete components, and Arduinos and shields and am enjoying every minute of it :) Shame I have to go out to work really :lol:

Hi, sorry if this has been mentioned before, or elsewhere, I've received my gert board and a little bit unsure where to start. I've read through the assembly manual (http://www.element14.com/community/serv ... v1.1_F.pdf) a couple of times, and I can see where all the big components go, but really struggling with the SMDs.

The SMD's all look the same, or very similar, and I can't see which ones go where. I've got 4 bags i'm trying to work out, they are 1833825, 117=9460, 1759252 and 175-9265. Is there a key somewhere I am missing ... What am I missing?

Ok, so while still waiting for Farnell to finish processing my order, I have had the house apart and cannot find my old Antex iron so I am going to have to buy a new one.
I remember that the lost one was only 15W which may have been underpowered anyway.
So the question is, what best to replace it with 18W or 25W? ( A variable temp solder station is beyond the budget unfortunately)

I put mine together with an Antex 18 watt. If it's to be your main iron, I'd get the 25 though as for anything larger, the 18 watt is a bit weedy. :D Since you're putting an order in, get yourself a stand and a fine tip too - you'll thank me for that when you do the SMDs. Ooh and some fine solder would be really helpful too. I managed with 1mm, but thinner would be better I think.

I used my 25W Antex, with a fine tip, for mine with no problem. And a lamp/magnifier, tweezers and 0.4mm solder. And a stand, with a damp sponge in the base.
