Small wifi dongle powered directly from RPi

Wed Aug 29, 2012 2:01 pm

Is EdiMAX's EW7811un the only one small(nano) wifi dongle which can be powered directly from RPi?
Any other suggestion?

I think the one mentioned here works ok powered directly. Based on this I ordered one the other day, but I can't remember why I think that, so perhaps you should confirm this with SirLagz...

(Also note this dongle comes in two versions: with and without detachable aerial.)

I measured the current draw of a few WiFi dongles, see data here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3//view ... 09#p125003

Note that the current draw depends on the data rate! The two I tried will work OK with 10 Mbps internet, but will draw too much current when working at 20 or 30 Mbps connecting to a HDD on the LAN. (Unless you have a new R-Pi with the USB fuses replaced with 0-ohm jumpers)
