Camera showing blank screen

Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:59 pm

Hi, I've done a search for information on this but couldn't find anything that answered my queries - but apologies if it is out there and I missed it!

I've got a birdbox mounted on the back of my shed with a IR camera inside connected to a pi which is inside the shed. This is all hooked up and streaming to a channel on Ustream and has been working like a dream (I pretty much followed the instructions on streaming from this post http://www.raspberrypi.org/learning/infrared-bird-box/).

A pair of blue tits have taken up residence and just as it looks like they will be laying eggs shortly, the thing has gone on the blink and only streams a blank black screen!

It is unlikely that the birds can have done anything to the camera given the way it's been installed - the Ustream channel does say that it's live so it's not that the channel is just off-air. I've tried rebooting the pi and then starting up the streaming again but this has done no good.

Obviously I can't just take the camera out to have a look as now it's set up there's not a lot I can do at that end. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be the cause - will it simply be that the camera is no longer working properly?

To isolate the problem, if you have remote access to the Pi, you can log on, kill any recording and streaming processes, and try a simple raspistill or raspivid. If you get good images that way, your hardware is okay and you should look closer at your streaming route. If not, I guess there isn't much you can do until you can inspect the hardware setup.

Best regards,
Kári.

Along similar lines to kaos, are you actually getting frame being streamed or is it a total lack of any output data?
You don't say exactly where the camera is in the box, but if it is producing frames which are just black, then I'd guess that a part of the nest is over the lens.

Raspistill also just produces a plain black image. I've tried during daylight hours so even if the IR LED which is in the box (it's a noir camera) was on the blink, the daylight would still show an image, but there's nothing at all showing.

I'm taking it from that that it's the camera which is at fault. It's a bit hard to explain how the camera is mounted, but it's basically on top of a bit of wood which has a hole cut into it, which in turn has been mounted up at the top of the box so it's looking down on the nest.

It is possible that somehow the bird has knocked the wood so that the camera has somehow come loose and is no longer pointing directly through the hole but I would still expect it to pick up some light and give a picture of sorts but this is completely blank. The streaming software is showing 25fps so I presume it is actually sending some data out, albeit nothing worth looking at!

I guess it's a case of just waiting until the birds have flown and investigating further then unfortunately :(

Maybe the birds have the camera sabotaged?
For me they have tried it.

Haha!! Maybe I underestimated them - I didn't think they would be too bothered by it!

I meant to reply to this thread sooner, but Craig and I did speak on twitter. I found the outcome quite interesting.

Since I was not at all that wrong with my guess.
It was the wasps and not birds

Sorry, I meant to reply to this sooner too!

Camera got destroyed getting the wasps out, but new one just installed 5 minutes ago - happy to say birdies are still using the box despite their lodgers and me disrupting things!

All back up and running - for good hopefully this time... http://www.ustream.tv/channel/springwatch-jnr :D
