piipcam

Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:58 am

So, I've been making myself a webcam based on the Raspberry Pi and camera module. I hope to have a proper write-up ready in the next few days, but in the meantime the end result can be viewed at http://kari.wifi.is:8081. Any comments, bug reports, etc. would be most welcome. The default user interface is in Icelandic, but you can click on English in the upper left corner to change that.

Here's a picture of it in action:
Image
Features:
-Motorized (panning), capable of traversing ca. 180°, though only 140° are used in the current setup.
-Weatherproof housing, with no moving parts outside.
-Webserver.
-WiFi for connectivity.
-Takes a still image and video clip in predetermined list of directions (currently three directions).
-Stores the last x (currently set at 10) pictures taken in each direction. One picture per direction per hour stored for a longer time. The oldest of these are eventually also deleted to make sure SD-card doesn't fill completely up.
-Video clips served with JWplayer (HTML5 with flash fallback), which should make them viewable in most browser configurations.

looks great. I will be interested to read your write-up when you get it done. That just like something I'd like to try out.

In Icelandic: Hæ Kári. Lítur mjög spennandi út. Ég hlakka til að heyra meira um þetta verkefni!

First part of the write-up is now ready at http://ystaskemma.is/?p=180&lang=en This part is mostly a components list; the next one should be a bit juicier, with some actual assembly instructions.

Meanwhile, if anybody was trying to look at the camera last week and saw only black frames, my apologies. We were "experiencing technical difficulties", namely that my brother was staying at the ancestral farm, wanted a bit of privacy, and ensured it by wrapping the camera in plastic bag  . A side effect of this is that piipcam has acquired a new feature, multiple views, where you need a password to view some camera headings.

Second part of the writeup is finally up at http://ystaskemma.is/?p=224&lang=en. This deals with the hardware assembly, excluding the housing. Next part will deal with software setup and testing.
