Look at the "motion" program. It can do all that and more, it just requires a fair bit of configuration. It is available from the standard Raspbian repositories.

Code: Select all

Description: V4L capture program supporting motion detection
Motion is a program that monitors the video signal from
one or more cameras and is able to detect if a significant
part of the picture has changed. Or in other words, it can
 detect motion.
 .
Motion is a command line based tool. It has no graphical
user interface. Everything is setup either via the
command line or via configuration files.
 .
The output from motion can be:
    - jpg/ppm image files
    - mpeg/mp4/swf/flv/mov/ogg video sequences
 .
Also, motion has its own minimalistic web server. Thus,
you can access the webcam output from motion via a browser.
More information on Motion here: https://motion-project.github.io/
but don't use the download links from that site. Use one of the standard package managers available in Raspbian (Add/Remove software menu on the desktop, apt, aptitude or synaptic on the command line).

The name of the package and program is motion. V4L is set of drivers for cameras on Linux which motion uses to access cameras. It is short for Video4Linux. A version to use the official Raspberry Pi camera is included in Raspbian and just has to be activated.

There are lots of guides available on how to set up Motion on the Pi (websearch "motion on Pi"), but the configuration file has a lot of options and can be daunting at first. Make sure you use a fairly recent guide as software does change.

See the movie_output option. I don't have a Pi set up for testing at the moment. I might have a go when I get back from work this evening.

MotionEye OS and Pikrellcam are two I use.
Pikrellcam works better if you have the Pi camera as it uses the h.264 motion vectors for sensing

Well that's what it says?
Been awhile since I tried a Zero, last time I did, it worked, this one is newer.
I wonder if a Zero W would work with a Sony EyeCam, the B, B+'s did and the Zero is faster.
Going to have to try with the 3A+ now I have some.

There are USB analog video grabbers, I don't have any but I have 4 analog cameras with night vision.

For Zero's I usually start the SD cards in B+'s and once it is all working then plug it into a Zero
The WiFi is a bit of a pain. to setup.

All mine are Ethernet connected fixed installs with power.
Going to have to try Zero' Ws and 3A+ now.
Battery power a few, even solar them?

I ran Motion Eye OS on a Zero W. It was OK for taking stills via Motion. Not so much when streaming Videos though, very choppy with lots of lag. Using 3A+'s now. At 720P its not to bad video wise. My FPS fluctuates a bit but thats likely because I'm streaming over my WIFI.
My big complaint with Motion Eye is the setup. If you go with the stock image, no modifications, you have to have a working ethernet connection or it just endlessly reboots. I plug a USB hub in that has an ethernet jack in it in to do my setup. Once I setup my wifi I unplug it and run the Pi headless. I'm using Pi foundation V2 cameras.

All the Motion eye images are here, https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos/ ... d-Devices
Pick the correct image for the model Pi you have. I do my setup via the web GUI. I haven't tried to do it directly on the Pi via a monitor keyboard and mouse.
