Sharpness setting on Camera Board V2 Sony IMX219

Tue Dec 04, 2018 5:49 pm

Hello:
Does the sharpness work on the Camera Board V2 (Sony IMX219)?
I had used 'raspistill -sh -100' up to 'raspistill -sh 100' using values in between and my image is not changing.
Is that normal?

It should work, but I'll agree that it appears to do very little.
I'll add it to the list of things to investigate, but it is quite a long list.

OK, been taking a look at this - there is clearly some oddness in the tuning that if I fix up, means that sharpening is noticeable. Not as pronounced as the OV5647, but this is sensor dependant, so that not to difficult to believe. I reckon sharpening was being applied, its just that the effects were so slight as to be unnoticable.

I'll tidy up the whole area and double check with everyone that its OK to update the firmware tomorrow.

Yes please. Thank you for being so diligent in this matter. Much appreciated.
Just let us know asap when the firmware is ready.

This has turned in to a can of worms. I was able to get the sharpness settings to make a difference in preview, but have been unable to get the stills to match what you see in preview. Camera tuning is a PITA. I'll keep trying stuff, but am waiting for someone who is more of an expert to get back in to the office for some advice.

Not yet, I've been working on some other stuff. I'll try and get back on this in the next week or so.

Ok. Knowing that the sharpness does not work on the IMX219, is it also safe to assume that the sharpness is not at nominal (default, or middle) setting on bootup?
I observe that the sharpness between the Camera V1 (OmniVision OV5647) has a sharper image than the V2 (Sony IMX219).
Why would that be?

The sharpness should be pretty good, the sharpen block is used, it's just that it is not particularly noticeable when you change the value.

It's possible your sensor is out of focus, I'd check that first.

Questions:
1. What is a "sharpness block"?
2. We reduce the sharpness on the V1 (OmniVision), we get the equivalent sharpness on V2 (Sony). Why?
Note:
We have a system that use both V1 and V2 for comparison, knowing that both sensors are in focus.
