Re: New Aluminum RPi Case/Enclosure

I was one of the lucky few who received a Pi in the US on the first shipment. My father works at a sheet metal fabricator and stole the Pi for a few days. This is what he came back with. Its thin aluminum but very rigid, and powder coated blue.

He messed up and made an opening next to the HDMI port thinking something went int there. Aside from that I think it came out awesome. I'm gonna line the inner wall and the studs the pi sits on inside until I can find some sticky rubber pads. It fits plenty snug but is easy to take the top off and remove. Not bad eh?

Nice photos! The connector openings look perhaps larger than really necessary, but the case looks good- that design would fit right into an industrial environment. And, being metal it might also reduce any radiated emissions (RFI).

Thanks! Yeah he told me he purposefully made them larger to insure they'd function. He's gonna fine tune it and make me another one slightly customized. I'm loving it though.

Most of the concepts I've seen online have been plastic cases. There might be quite a bit of interest in a metal case, if the price was right.  Are there plans to put this into production?  My only suggestion would be some screw holes for more permanent mounting options. Although, given it's aluminum, I guess people could drill it easily enough.  And maybe an option for a ribbon cable slot for access to GPIO pins.

Depending on the interest, he said he could easily make a few of these for anyone interested. He has the design saved in whatever software they use so he could tinker with it no problem.

Are people interested??

Yea, I'm interested.  Like jbeale pointed out you need an opening for an I/O cable.  Make sure there are no sharp edges.

The important thing here is that you don't need to spend $10K to $20K for a tool and your basic material cost is low.

I'm provisionally interested, subject to pricing- much less interested if it is expensive. My own Pi is still in the unconfirmed indefinite future, so I will wait for confirmation before making any solid plans for housing it.

Does the Pi simply rest loose in the case, or is it held tightly in some way? I'd think to really clamp the board in place, you need some plastic parts, unless you're confident about the integrity of the powder coating to avoid possible shorts when contacting the PCB parts and/or traces. I'd be OK tacking it on with hot-melt glue, but just wondering about the design.

I would absolutely be interested in one of these if the option ever presented itself. Much prettier than most of the ridiculous injected plastic cases I've seen. What's the chance of being able to get one?

If enough people are interested possibly it could be put into production

That looks great! Certainly one of the nicest "home-made cases" I've seen so far. :D
