You're right, a plugin would be the best if you can't manage with built-in alarms and playlists.
Religious necro might have been even more relevant a few weeks ago.
Consider attaching a GPS module to the RPI, as the GPS module also provides super accurate time reference in GMT, plus location so you can determine the local timezone. Have a RPi connected to a speaker. As soon as it is prayer time, it would play an audio file (call to prayer). The prayer timings are same every similar day of the year (7/9/2001 vs 7/9/2013). So you'd have to input them only once.
Is this possible? Has anyone seen something similar done before?
