PiCE Case

Thu Jun 27, 2013 12:35 pm

Guys & Gals,

What are your thoughts on this PiCE the Pi Camera Enclosure? Could work well with the new camera features of RaspBMC

Thanks Gary,

My name's Phil, i'm one of the guys here at Elson Designs who's helped design the PiCE and we would all be very grateful for your thoughts and ideas on the project.
I've added a few images of the PiCE. The first two are rendered.

I personally would like to see the camera turned round 90 degrees. So it's more to stand on the widest side of the case.

Thanks guys, this is exactly what we're after and we're now designing in the ability to mount the PiCE onto a Tri-Pod. Having the camera in dual positions is a little more complicated, however we'll keep you informed with how we get on.

If no camera is installer, and a microSD adapter is used, is there room for 6 AA batteries within the case?

We're designing some modules which fit onto the rear of the PiCE. One of the designs will be to hold batteries so the PiCE can be deployed remotely and protect the Ethernet, USBs and Power from water ingress so you could use it outside. Below is an example showing just the ingress protection module.

At the moment there wouldn't be room inside the PiCE for 6AA batteries.

Looks good, to me 'remote' implies Wireless not Ethernet cable, any thoughts on getting round the screening issues that, I imagine, will come along with a metal case?

In my line of business 'remote' implies that it is remote from the operator's normal working position. For example, an imaging processor that is up the mast alongside the camera it is connected to. The operator is in a building at ground level. The only way the operator can use the imaging processor is 'remotely' via something like VNC or RDP. The nature of the connection in between is immaterial, in fact we prefer cables.

Yes, we assumed Wi-fi, 3G, 4G etc so the modules we're designing will be made from plastics so they're RF transparent.

It would be much improved with a button or two - one for 'take snapshot' and one for 'start/stop recording', and maybe an indicator light. I know the case is not intended to turn the pi into a standalone camera (otherwise it'd have a battery pack as well), but a couple of buttons would come in very handy...

Also, if there's space (which judging by the 3d printed prototype, there is), a simple viewfinder would be easy to implement - something like a hole straight through, or maybe one with a smallish square hole on one side going to a larger one on the other side with a circle and a crosshair or something like that maybe - so you can look through and make sure it's pointing in the right direction without needing a screen.

*looks back at thread* ah, you've got the camera placement in a 'video camera' type placement, so wouldn't fit with my viewfinder idea. Forget that then :P The button might still be nice though.

Just a couple of thoughts. :)

That's a tricky one. While we could modify the design to add in a couple of buttons we want to keep the design as generic as we can. Adding buttons would also add a cost to the design (in terms of tooling complexity and actual buttons) and increase other risks like security, water ingress etc.

What you could do, (I'm quite happy to write a tutorial once we're funded) is drill a couple of holes for some buttons on one of the side panels and wire them to the GPIO pins. Write a little script to listen to those pins and take stills / video based on their state. The PiCE already has the camera LED on the front so you'd also be able to tell when the camera was recording / taking stills.

I hope this helps.

I'm the same too, I've backed 3 projects now and think back "Why did I need one of them." But I would use the PiCE, but I already have a milled aluminium case that cost me a small fortune to have it shipped in from the USA.

You've just made our day! It'd be great to put some red LED's in those holes!
