Magnetic door lock

Tue Apr 09, 2013 4:45 pm

Hello,
After guiltily watching my raspberryPi gathering dust, I put it to use as an RFID lock controller. It was great fun, and is now in dalily use. It uses a MIFARE reader from ebay, so will work with most transportation / bank / building access cards .

Details live here:

Cheers,

Magnetic door lock is another kind of lock that you can rely for safety.

Hi,

I'm very interested in doing a similar thing, but I am having problems getting the RFID / MIFARE readers to work under linux. I was wondering what type of reader you are using and how you have got it connected (USB??) and what you have had to do with the drivers to get it to work?

I have tried a 'full featured' device like Omnikey 5321 and also a 'dumb' featureless one like ProMag 330 : http://www.jarltech.de/2007/artikel.php ... fulltext=1

On windows the Omnikey device doesn't do anything without specific software running to access the device, but the ProMag just reads the mifare card serial number and outputs it as a keyboard command.

How did you get yours to work on the raspberry pi ?

Many thanks

Hi,

It really depends on the reader you have, but in my experience they fall into two main groups:

Those that appear as an HID device - a keyboard.
Those that appear as a serial port

I can see that the "progmac" device you mention is the former - it appears as a keyboard.

Those that appear as serial ports are actually easier to integrate into projects. Reliably reading from the standard input that is the device, and not the standard input that might be a real keyboard or ssh session, can be a pain. However, if it is a serial device you can simply open a connection at the right baud rate and talk to the unit.

On the Pi I could have used USB - though in fact I ended up using the UART on the GPIO pins, so that I could leave the USB free.

This worked fine, but you have to be careful, since these pins run at 3v3 logic - 5v logic can damage them.

Also, by default this is a serial console, wheras you want to use it for a device. This post:

http://raspberrypihobbyist.blogspot.co. ... -port.html

Explains how to do that

This is the kit I used:

I have also used one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RFID-ISO14443 ... 2eca279be3

Which worked just as well, and appears as a USB COM port rather than bare TTL serial - so easier to use, but less easy to nicely integrate into a product.

Your an absolute star !!

going to have a play, have managed to get the ProMag reader to work by making sure it was plugged in when I switched on the Pi so at least I now have a starting point.

Thanks for your comments about the type you have got, extremely helpful :-)

Hi There,
is this would work for us , please kindly advice.
we have 2Main door and 7 Office door. what we would like is to have one main unit that will control all the doors and it would also act as an alarm as well for the building . using RFID or any other secure cards and motion and fire sensors and cameras for the building and offices ? etc ,

is this possible please ? Who can help us to build this ?

I would recommend a qualified and licensed electronic security technician.
