Re: Design Case for the Raspberry Pi

Fri Mar 16, 2012 4:38 pm

For the led"s, I""ve created a transparent part which fit with the power symbol hole. This transparent part will capture all the 5 leds to the power symbol. So, the power button will be multicolor (there is differents leds) and will flash when for example the Raspberry Pi is searching/working on an usb port or other port.

I cut the case with a curve, because the inferior case are the front, the back and the back sides. So with a curve, I think, if you want to put two colors, like white on the top and grey on the back, the case will have a nicer look than with a case cut straight.

But I will draw two cases, one with a curve for the separation of the case and an other straight.

I must add my congratulations on your well-thought-out ideas. The case designs are very nice.

Do you have any idea of the final cost of these yet?

How about a cut-out to reach the internal headers? If I use R-Pi in a development setting I'd still like to try to protect the unit while having access to the headers.

The price of my case will be around 30euros for a printed case from shapeways.com for example.

After, if I have suffisant orders for my case, I can created a fitted version for injection plastic, and order a matrix in order to have a cheaper price.

I can create an other superior case with some cut-out in order to reach the GPIO header and the others for example. But the case will not look very "nice" with some cuts.

But I can do it if I've got the right measurments for each headers on the Raspberry Pi board.

I'm sure that the case wouldn't look too good. My thinking was instead of ruining a very nice design how about seeing if the base can hold the R-Pi firmly. That would allow me to remove the top cover if I wanted to get to the connectors and replace it once I'm finished?

In principle, the Raspberry PCB will be firmly hold to the buttom case. So you will able to open and close the case with the Raspberry board always attached to inferior part of the case.

Thanks.

I"m working on an another version with less material volume in order to have a cheaper price. This project will be fully injectable in plastic.

Just for fun:

I'm almost done with my new case. It will be under 25 euros on shapeways. As soon as finished I will post some pictures of my new drawing.

ortherwise, I work also on an VESA case support. A very simply case which juste provide the VESA support.

Just a picture of my new case optimized for a cheaper cost on 3D printers and also compatible for injection molding machine.

Available soon on shapeways!

I will post other pictures of my case this week-end (If I have some free time!)

I agree, it is indeed a very attractive looking case.

It is possible I might have missed them, but have you posted any photographs of an actual 'production model' case, rather than just computer generated images?

My only concern is the rather high price in relation to the cost of the Raspberry Pi computer itself, although I am still tempted to buy one, once they are actually available!

I will post some picture of the "real case" this week. But I printed it at work and it's not a good 3D printer (dimension 1200es). So the aspect is not very nice but it's enough to judge the mechanical aspect of the case.

By the way, on shapeways 3D printers technology is different and better. The aspect is very smooth. I order one on it, but the shipping is very long!!

For my new case I've got some news.

I contact some companies in order to inject it in plastic for a cheaper price. I also contact some companies for packaging and shipping. I found some solutions to realise an injected case for a good price ( around 10-15euros).

But I need some money! My new case (and my first case)  will be on shapeways to print it. With a VAT around 1euros per case on shapeways I will be able to start my project if I reach 2000 cases.

The price on shapeways for my new case will be under 25euros (with VAT 1euros).

Here some picture of my project :

I hope you like it!! (this case is compatible with VESA support, I will post some pictures of my VESA adaptator!)

Thanks!

I create a VESA support (VESA MIS-D, 100/75) for my case.

There are two parts for the VESA holder. One is attached to the screen or any devices compatible vith VESA. And the other part is an adaptator which is plug into my VESA support.

This adaptator works with my 2 cases.

I'm working on an another adaptator for my VESA support. It will fit to the Pi board without case!

Sorry, but I am a bit confused here!

In the pictures back in Post No: 28 you showed the case with a 'louvred', or ventilated base, but the ones in Post No:47 (above) have a completely 'open' base.

Are you proposing to produce two different models, or just alternative bases?

My personal preference would definitely be for the first option.

Thanks.

Yes, I draw two models.

The first one (post n°28) with ventilated base. It's a kind of a strong luxury case.

The price is under 35euros (on shapeways) because there are a lot of material volume and also strong wall thickness.

The second case, without the cap and with open base, was design in order to have a cheaper price for 3D print. The price is under 25euros for that one because there are less material volume.

So there is 2 cases. The first is on shapeways, the second will come also.

For the first case price I'm working on it in order to reduce the price.

Many thanks for the clarification... I do still like the 'luxury' one though, and will be following your progress with interest.

I hope it won't be too long before you receive a 'production model' of the Raspberry Pi computer so that you can check it out, and ensure that all the various 'holes' are in exactly the right place!
