Raspberry PI is ideal for it's designed application. It's also at a price sweetspot for alot of other applications. However some of these applications would benefit from only exposing power and ethernet connections to the end user, along with peripheral connections.

This presents a problem with power and ethernet being at different ends of the RPi board.

It should be possible to remove the ethernet, and USB connectors and replace with headers to allow connection to a motherboard / daughterboard along with the GPIO header.

To do this accurate dimensions are required, and a 'final' GPIO connector configuration available. Once this information is available it should be possible to produce a (shield / cape) type outline in the popular PCB packages.

Does anyone have an interest in this ?

Perhaps if there is enough interest then RaspberryPi boards could be shipped without USB / ethernet connectors installed.

Possible applications / benifits

Use off the shelf casing solutions
Easier POE solutions presenting only a single RJ45 socket
Embedded USB peripherals

There's no chance they will produce partially populated boards - see previous threads, it just costs too much to do so for too little demand. But for your case there is a simpler solution - get a socket (usb or any other type), cut through a micro usb cable and then connect the power leads to the socket and just plug the other end into the board.

When you get your Pi you are free to do with it what you want but the likelihood of bits of it being optionally left off are less than nil. Oh look. There goes another flying pig.

sarcasm aside the RPF has firmly stated that it is extremely cost prohibitive to stop the production midstream (the boards are populated by machine, not by hand) and ship a select few with specific components unattached.  Sorry.

GadgetUK,

Agree with you that a fully customizable board is appreciated. However as RPF stated this is not economically possible, (thinking of QA without connectors populated?)

I think I'm going to desolder the composite and stereo connector.

As for the dual USB socket I don't like it because the position is rather awkward. I'll desolder it too and replace with 4 2.54mm pitch dual pin head (The standard mounting of USB head is two lines of 2.5mm - 2mm - 2.5mm gap, I hope 2.54 pin head can squeeze in) towards the bottom. Then it will be possible to mount RPi onto a bigger board with other electronics.

Just some thoughts, waiting for tomorrow to grab mine first board...
