RPi DeX in Macbook Pro

Firstly, hello all! I am new to this forum (I think I posted an intro before). I got my RPi at Xmas and went about installing RetroPie. However, after getting that working (relatively straight forward), I have been stuck for ideas on what to do with it next.

So my first idea is to mount the RPi inside a laptop (MB Pro) although I'm not sure it will physically fit so might need to make some changes to the RPi. The first stage will be to get it to boot and work as a normal laptop (essentially so that I can learn to programme etc.). The alternative (and probably what I will do first) is get the RPi working externally to the laptop but operating from the laptop power button.

The second stage will be to turn the laptop into a Samsung DeX like device. For those who don't know what DeX is:

If I can't mount the RPi inside the MB, I will try and turn it into a sensible looking docking station for the phone.

I am going to be getting a OnePlus 5T soon, with 128Gb memory and 8GB RAM, which should run fairly smoothly as a 'laptop' as there is little to no bloat-ware on the phone and it is pretty fast. I'd ideally like the RPi to then give me the option of booting as an RPi normally or to use the phone as the brains and act simply as the interface to display it .

The other option is to incorporate the RPi, a small projector and docking point for the phone into one small case but the MB Pro is the first choice (at this stage).

This is a fairly ambitious project for me, but something to get stuck into. The reason for this project is that my MB Air is 7 years old and I am looking to replace it with a desktop for more power and a lot cheaper, and I'd actually still quite like a laptop for the rare occasion I'll need one.

Any useful resources for this would be greatly appreciated!

Ok so the DeX bit will come much later. Research suggests that it is going to be even more difficult than I thought to get that bit working. However, a friend at work is (hopefully) going to bring me in a laptop carcass next week (no HDD, no RAM, everything else there) that I can start messing around with to get the first part working. In the meantime, reading, reading and more reading.

Have you gotten any farther along? I've been working on the same for some time now.
