Rpi usb memory stick copier

Mon May 02, 2016 6:58 pm

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but........
I need a small portable unit that could be used to copy files from a micro SD card ( in a usb adapter) onto a standard usb memory stick.
This sounds like an ideal project for my RPi, but I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone done anything like this before, or any ideas how this migt be accomplished?

You'd need to add a USB card reader [you can't use the built in one].

It would be simple to use something like rsync to copy all the files from an sd card to a usb stick, but it will get a bit more complex if you want to copy multiple cards to 1 usb stick - presumably you'd want to put each card into a separate directory.

You'll need some sort of user interface. You could arrange to copy immediately when the sd card is inserted, but at a minimum you'd need an indication of 'in progress', 'copy complete' and 'error'. An LED or two could do this, or you could use a small LCD display for a more user friendly solution.

Can you suggest why I can't use the existing USB ports? For other reasons, I've been able to read files from a USB stick, and also write files to a USB stick, both in the RPi ports directly.
At any one time, the requirement is to plug in a microSD card into a USB adapter, read all files on that card (only about 3 files, each about 300Mb), and write these files to a standard USB memory stick.

I said you couldn't use the built-in card reader.
As you're going to use a USB card reader, there is no problem.

Why is that?
