Re: OpenWRT

Someone (projectgus) has ported OpenWRT to the Zipit Z2 which is an ARMv5 based device (PXA270) and I was thinking it might be nice to port it to the raspberry pi. It has a very small ram and storage footprint and a reasonable package repository.

Info on the Zipit port can be found here (disclaimer: my blog with a link to the real site -- i need/want the hits :D ) http://russelldavis.org/2011/1.....-zipit-z2/

Although it's not a terrible idea, openwrt is designed for devices which less ram and alot less filespace then the RPI.

I am more looking forward to using archlinuxarm on my RPI.

Speaking of routers and firmware, would it be possible to modify code on Debian or if someone ports Dd-wrt or Open-wrt to change PI's 10/100 ethernet into a wan port and use a usb wireless transmitter to turn the PI into a mini router?

There isn't really a need to modify code to do that, Debian, or pretty much any linux distro, can run as a router. Apart from configuration, the hardest part will be finding a usb stick which has ARM drivers *and* can act as an access point (unless you're OK with ad-hoc only)

I have been messing around with the openwrt build system and built a version that works for armv6 so it should work on the raspi and be pretty light and fast. just need to wait until i get hold of the real hardware to just tweak it up a bit and get the kernel configured for the real hardware too

There is also another openwrt on raspberrypi project here...

https://github.com/derlunz/openwrt-raspberrypi

To me, the point about openwrt above and beyond other more standard distros is its lighter use of ram because of uClibc. I also like the concept of producing an 8Mb to 16Mb single "firmware" that is functionally complete and remarkably bloat-free compared to a 1Gb to 3Gb set of packages. Openwrt will run a very complete server in 32Mb of ram so that makes for an EXCELLENT core system to then run Qt5 (in my case). I don't want a lot of "crap" in the non-gui core OS so a uClibc based busybox shell system is ideal to bootstrap whatever you want to throw at the gpu.

I would wager (any takers?) that openwrt + qt5 + wayland + egl drivers will out perform any other linux distro.

Sadly I can't boot the card:
mmcblk0 error -110 sending stop command, orginal cmd response 0x900, card status 0x900
mmc0 final write to SD card still running
I tried it with no name as well as Samsung Cards :(

ok i tested a little bit further, it does boot up, but keeps on showing these errors - so ain't completly right.
and dns / nslookup seems to be malfunctioning / not getting configured correctly from dhcp.
other than that, it does already look great!

and opkg does try to go to downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/brcm2708 which does not exist (as openwrt hasn't included support for this, so thats true)

also, I would advise that you use the start_224.elf for the openwrt.
(rename to start.elf) so that 224 mb ram would be used for openwrt and about 32 for the gpu.

openwrt does use about 10 mb of ram in idle, so it is just awesome. I would love to get nginx, php-fpm and mysql-server running on that thing.

Thanks for your hard work already!

I did manage to get mine to boot also (but with these same errors). Was using an old slow 1G card that came factory with my Canon Powershot. Will try some known good cards as soon as I move other projects off them.

The link is not for rpi4.patch.tar.gz, it's linked to 14815-001.bin

Would you verify the link

Thanks again

Would you still have a GUI accessible from the Pi's onboard video output or wpuld you have to SSH in or access the device from a web browser or other such idea. (I'm assuming so because we're using routerware on the Pi.)

Little update: OpenWRT is not completly ready, but at http://code.google.com/p/raspberrypi-openwrt/
it is already working fantastic. Latest infos are given in the newsgroup here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgr ... %5B1-25%5D

OpenWRT is working there without errors, but without all the news features from the real OpenWRT image / trunk. Problem with the orginal is, it does boot, but gives out huge amounts of SD Card errors all the time. And thats already solved in the google project posted above.

So, maybe that does help out others.
Thanks to juanRIOT for kicking my butt to write this down, I am in a lot of work at the moment, sorry!

Do I need to repoint opkg somewhere else?

Some update.

I compile currently svn code and add support for SPI and I2C :)

Download from: ftp://artekw.cerbero.pl/openwrt/trunk/brcm2708/

Add some packages like nginx, apache, php5 and python do install via opkg. Simply:

opkg update
opkg install <package>

More info (in Polish) on http://openwrt.pl/doku.php/urzadzenia:raspberrypi
