HifiBerry Amp+ no audio with Raspbian Buster

Tue Sep 03, 2019 8:10 pm

Hi guys. I have an RPi 3B with Raspbian and Mopidy. Things (Mopidy, sadly) broke at some point - no audio playback anymore - and I decided to upgrade from Raspbian Jessie to Raspbian Buster, hoping that might help. I have replaced Mopidy with raspotify in the meantime, which seems to have solved the Spotify connectivity issues, but not the underlying audio problem. I've seen a few topics here about people with add-on sound cards losing their audio after upgrading to Buster, so I'm asking for help (I'm close to pulling my hair out).

ALSA output looks just fine, I've disabled onboard audio, followed the HifiBerry instructions for newer kernels, but no dice.

Code: Select all

# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_amp], device 0: HifiBerry AMP HiFi tas5713.1-001b-0 []
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I'm not sure what the 0/1 subdevice is about; it appeared as 1/1 at some point but it doesn't seem to make the slightest difference audio wise (still silent). Alsamixer sees the HifiBerry just fine either way.

Playing audio seemingly works but the speakers just stay silent:

Code: Select all

root@rpi1:/usr/share/sounds/alsa# aplay Front_Left.wav
Playing WAVE 'Front_Left.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Raspotify seems to work nicely so that's not it either:

Code: Select all

Volume muted perhaps? Have you checked settings with "amixer"?

@epoch1970

I have unmuted both Master and Channels, but it looks like they weren't muted in the first place. It doesn't make a difference either, still no sound. Thanks for the tip though.

Code: Select all

# amixer set Channels 30% unmute
Simple mixer control 'Channels',0
  Capabilities: volume
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: 0 - 248
  Front Left: 75 [30%]
  Front Right: 75 [30%]
root@rpi1:~# amixer set Master 30% unmute
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 248
  Mono: 75 [30%]

So, I tried downgrading to a 4.14 kernel to see if that would work (now on the raspberrypi-kernel 20190401, which is the last 4.14 kernel the foundation provides).

I am seeing this in dmesg, but it looks OK after a few tries:

Code: Select all

# dmesg |grep hifiberry
[    4.842036] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    5.053607] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    5.072486] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    6.522518] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: tas5713-hifi <-> 3f203000.i2s mapping ok
Module list seems to look OK, but still no sound:

FYI, this:

Code: Select all

# dmesg |grep hifiberry
[    4.842036] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    5.053607] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    5.072486] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI tas5713-hifi not registered - will retry
[    6.522518] snd-hifiberry-amp soc:sound: tas5713-hifi <-> 3f203000.i2s mapping ok
is normal or harmless. I see that on every I2s amplifier I have. It only happens at boot, IIRC.

Your sound issue is unrelated.

I thought so yes, but I'm grasping at straws.

Anything else I can check?

Well, the good news is: I did a reinstall. First Raspbian Stretch on which I froze the kernel on the last 4.14 one. That worked, but it turned out the volume was way too low (somehow on Jessie 30% was plenty though).

Then flashed the latest Raspbian Buster image, booted, upped the volume considerably again. Still worked. Updated everything apt could find, rebooted, still works. So things are looking good!

Bad news: it seems like the low volume was the culprit and since my brother could only test in the evening, when his kids were asleep, we didn't turn it up enough. So lots of time wasted on that...
