Video DJ Setup

I have a Pi 3 with a 3.5" TFT touchscreen that I'm considering using as a Video DJ device at events, hooked up to a projector system. Trying to figure out if this project makes sense before I get too involved in it. Basically, here's the concept:
On the small touch display, a GUI with buttons will be available. Each one can be assigned to a video / graphic / etc file. When pressed, it will send the required asset out the HDMI to the big screen system.

Seems simple enough, right? I know that OMXPlayer can send the output to the HDMI even if the internal display is in use (since it normally disables the hdmi), so I feel like all I need to do is create some sort of GUI that will send the appropriate command to invoke OMXPlayer with the correct parameters (file to be played, and on the external display). If anyone has ever used the Windows application Screen Monkey, that's sort of what I'm trying to replicate. I'm occasionally asked to run a projector at fundraiser events and what not, and I think the Pi used like this would make an excellent alternative to setting up my laptop each time.
Am I barking up the right tree? Any caveats I should be aware of? Has anyone done anything like this already that I could base it off?

Last week I attended BETT at the Excel, London, where I had an interesting chat with one of the developers at

http://www.curiouschip.com/blog/

This does pretty much what you describe you'd like to do.

Their inbuilt display uses the

DPI interface

& they have RPI's hdmi connector available for external screens or of course, projectors.

Read through:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 91&t=94424

for lots of information regarding routing video through DPI & HDMI.
DPI is a dedicated pre-programmed video interface, ie, it does not require setting up lots of GPIO pins programatically.

RPi fits the bill just fine for what you're looking to do.

Thanks!
Interesting stuff. I think the small touch screen I have is perfect for this, so the hardware is good- I need to figure out the software. Someone suggested I start learning Python (new to me), but all I need is command lines that are triggered when something on screen is pressed. What's the simplest/easiest way to make that happen?
