Hi,

Can anyone recommend a basic microphone, which can be used with the Pi model B, to record outdoor sounds such as bird noises?

A zoom h1 is $100 and is portable and I've connected it to the pi via USB to put the wav/mp3 files on my pi. But it's a recorder with mic in one. You could hook any mic up to the pi and record via audacity but the zoom h1 is more portable.

Real outdoor mics are kind of expensive. Sensitive mics can't stand moisture.

The Zoom suggestion might be your best bet. But everything depends on what you're trying to do.

You also need to take into account the RPi doesn't have sound input. So you need a USB audio interface. And one that works with the RPi.

Sorry my ignorance, but is it possible to use the audio output from the 3.5mm socket, to input audio?

Greetings,

No, you need something else, whether it be a USB device or a HAT

USB mics/interfaces that don't require a driver work best. But I don't know how to use them without audacity.
