MIDI Sequencer

Mon Jun 01, 2015 2:22 am

Just getting started with the community and came up with an idea for a project, that I would like to persue. Our church has an organ that I got to see being installed, and was ammused when the two computer boxes that were inside the case, behind the keyboards, had the classic scrolling Linux startup messages. Fast forward to today when my new RPi is just itching to be put to good use. Our church organ also has a MIDI in and MIDI out line set, and I got to read a bit of the instruction manual, and found with some clever programming, I believe it is possible to have a "player" pipe organ.

We are a small struggling church that cannot afford to pay a full time organist, so having a means of having a pushbutton solution would really do the trick. Does anyone have a simple (breadboard type) schematic for an RPi to MIDI 5pin DIN. Preferably using the GPIO and not the USB

Thank you in advance for all your help,

I've seen schematics for a GPIO to MIDI circuit. Google will have remembered the link.

Here's the original schematic for the MIDI interface:

I've made a couple of RPi MIDI add-on boards myself.

My first attempt way back in 2012 is here

And a later design in 2014 is here:

The tricky bit was configuring RPi for the 32150 baud rate.

USB MIDI interface

Why not go for a simple USB MIDI interface? See for a list of ones known to work with ALSA (and hence Linux in general). You can get really cheap (<£5) ones, but sometimes they can have reliability problems, especially with dealing with chords causing the need for several note-on signals at the same time.

I made a small USB MIDI interface module for exactly this purpose... Check out the For Sale forum for my post for more details, or also: ... -usbmidi2/

My first attempt was using the SPI bus, but in the end USB is so much more convenient that there's little reason to use anything else...
