Basically a computer will simulate a circuit in the same way a human would work out what would happen just by thinking about the circuit. Adding a real battery to an ephemeral thought hasn't been done yet. Generally circuit simulation is at sub-real time speeds and real inputs are themselves simulated. Output would appear as files of stuff or visualised on a simulation of an oscilloscope or logic analyser maybe even a bunch of pixels on a screen.
