Another one I'm thinking of is an oil tank level monitor, using some float switches. It could send SMS when the level goes down, which would have the dual effect of telling me if I need to order oil soon, or telling me someone is stealing my oil if I get multiple alerts in quick succession.

This is a very basic home automation project that I've put together.

It's very basic - simple on/off of lights and sockets, but has the advantage of using a commercial product without any need to get involved with mains wiring (except if installing a ceiling rose - which is swapped from a standard one - no direct connection to any home made circuitry).
