Can you be more specific. Are you measuring the depth of the water? PH or chemical make-up? Temperature? or all of the above? Ultimately that would help decide the type of meter you would be looking at purchasing then a search for code that has already been made for that meter and the Pi.

Hello,

The solution that i implemented in my home is buying watermeter like this one : http://www.wickes.co.uk/34in-class-c-do ... vt/228208/

Then i glued a magnet on one of the needle (the needle that count the liters at each turn).

With a reed switch like this one (http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/daten ... R_6_VA.pdf) connected to a 1-wire counter (ds2423).

Best regards

Presuming you have a ballcock on your water tank;
Mount a piece of plastic above the ball cock
Mount a microswitch (one with the lever on it) so that it is
switched by the ballcock (make the microswitch adjustable for height)
Connect to a GPIO pin and 0v with 10 k resistor to 3.3v pin and Gpio pin
Get Pi to count time time that the ballcock is down via the GPIO pin.
Calibrate ........in litres per sec
Consumption is total of times x calibration
only problem may be that (some) your water may come directly off the supply

Although the following link is for a water meter setup using an arduino it may give you some ideas to consider
