Hive Monitoring

Greetings,

Does anyone have recommended solutions or a sensor setup that would work for my project?

I want to integrate movement, temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide, along with a microphone for monitoring sound or sound levels, all onto a Raspberry Pi to capture data from inside my beehives - similar to the ApisProtect project that is in Ireland. There are a lot of projects, but not a lot of commercial product, and if it's available it's like $500 a hive by the time I get it to Canada - so, I'm better off building my own so I have a better understanding and can involve my kids in the process.

I'd also like to integrate a weight sensor to measure weights on my hives, but that might be in a later phase.

Has anyone successfully worked on something like this for personal use?

A couple of thoughts:

This video was kindly pointed out to me by PhatFil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpjfVc-9IrQ&t=818s and a version could be put together for the Pi. You will need to sound up by the way :lol: the humidity sensor is not the most accurate or stable one there is.

You could look at Pimoroni and their Breakout Garden https://shop.pimoroni.com/collections/breakout-garden as a test bed and go from there.

For ideas and an aim you could look at https://www.arnia.co.uk but I guess it makes your $500 a starting point :o Best thing I thought was the included weather station and graphics...

There is the old NASA project at https://honeybeenet.gsfc.nasa.gov/. Maybe the guys who ran that have a contact or two?

Last this is are you aware of the open source project at http://forum.hivetool.org/. They should be able to give you better advice than me on the hardware :lol:

HiveSense is out of Ottawa, but I can't tell if they're still in development or are deploying. I hung out with them at the Ottawa maker faire last year: good people, interesting project.

A very cool project !!!!

I know the temperature sensing in a hive requires significant accuracy, better than +/- 0.1C, and many sensing points. Remember that insects make sounds from the inaudible infrasonic (below 20hz), to well into th ultrasomic range (above 60khz).

POWER? do you need to provide power for devices to run for weeks on end?? that could be a significant drain on the budget?

Perhaps for temperature and humidity reading you could reduce a few of these

to something small enough to embed within a couple of locations within a hive
