License plate recognition?

Mon Apr 22, 2019 4:26 pm

Hello, I want to make my gate to be opened by car's license plate. Is it possible with Pi Zero? And what camera should I use?

Welcome to the forum,

I know this https://github.com/openalpr/openalpr ran OK on a PI 2 but not sure about the Zero.

How much is the screen refresh speed? I mean have you tested on a live video or you tested it with images?

Just a tip. Most commercial and law enforcement Number Plate Readers work in the IR spectrum. Allows them to disregard plastic covers, reflective (visible) paint, etc. Interesting fact, all 'genuine' number plates must be 100% readable in the IR spectrum.

I would use the RPi camera, as it has superb IR sensitivity, and any one of the various image processing libraries available.

Why read the number plate for just one car access? Consider RFID or even simpler, Bluetooth detection of your personal smartphone.

Although, machine vision projects are very cool.
..the only thing worse than a stupid question is a question not asked.
