Book to learn Robot Operating System (ROS) programming

Mon Nov 12, 2018 2:56 pm

I want to start learning ROS programming, obviously using Python, on a Raspberry PI. I know I wont be able to do overly complex systems using a Pi but it will be a good start. I've found this book doing a bit of Googling, "Programming Robots with ROS: A Practical Introduction to the Robot Operating System" by Morgan Quigley and Brian Gerkey. The reviews are about 50/50. Some make the comment that it's a bit outdated Published in 2015) others say it's a good book.

Any comments on this book or recommendations for another.

Thanks
John

What are you abreviating as ROS? At first I thought it was one of the slang abreviations for RISC OS, as I have seen it done like that before, though now I am not so sure.

If it is actually RISC OS, then I could point you to a few good options.
RPi = The best ARM based RISC OS computer around
More than 95% of posts made from RISC OS on RPi 1B/1B+ computers. Most of the rest from RISC OS on RPi 2B/3B/3B+ computers

Don't avoid C/C++/Julia if you are serious about robotics.... ;-)

Sorry for the late reply I've been traveling for business all day. Joel very interesting links to those courses, I'll definitely check those out. Scotty101 thanks for answering Davids question for me.

I've been programming industrial controls of different types for over 40 years, I've done a few Arduino and Raspberry Pi programs but this is a whole different level for me. Will be interesting and fun to figure it out.

Thanks so much for the feedback
John
