Pi power

Mon Oct 01, 2012 10:26 am

I have a Pi running in my car from the 12V lighter socket. I am using 2 usb ports but need a third. Also will probably use more power so want a powered usb hub. I can't find a 12V powered usb hub with multiple ports though :(

Powered hubs normally have a plug that lowers the voltage to that required for the HUB (eg. 6v or 9v) - you can replace that mains power supply with a cigerette lighter with a DC-to-DC convertor. Just make sure that the supply is regulated and that it provides the correct voltage and current required by your hub (details can be taken from the power supply provided):

Get a 5V DCDC converter. and power the hub from there.
(Find one that has a 5V wall-adapter. 5.1V or 5.2V will do fine as well).
