Portable GPS

Thu Oct 08, 2015 10:40 am

IS it possible to make a portable GPS system to track a cat? Ideally one that could be mounted on a collar?

Either Real time or downloadable?

Id be really interested to see where the cats dissappear to all day.

Anyone attempted this before?

Strapping a Raspberry Pi & Battery to an animal is not very friendly

Using a GPS Collar may be more comfortable for your Cat ;)

Sorry thats what i meant to say, the only GPS modules i could find where add on boards to the pi itself. I dont think i could fashion a draggable device!!! Or if i could it wouldnt go far ......... But then i wouldn't need the tracker ........ (no wait thats cruel) back on point

Something that could be attached to a collar, then either downloaded when the cat returns or somehow pinged live, maybe by using a Sim card?

You are unlikely to be able to make anything smaller/cheaper than those already available.

Have a look on the usual chinese electronics sites like banggood or aliexpress (even ebay) for small cheap gps trackers.

Maybe my plans were just over ambitious then, maybe take a step back and look to how this data would be read and take it form there
