RTL8188CUS and AP/hotspot mode

Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:04 pm

I'm baffled. I specifically went out and bought a nano wifi dongle with the RTL8188CUS chipset after seeing the forum posts on configuring and getting this working. lsusb says:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter
I've gone through all the steps in there (using "make" and "make install") and yet as soon as I try debug mode for hostapd I get "l2_packet_init: socket(PF_PACKET): Operation not permitted" and "rtl871xdrv driver initialization failed". I even tried the supposedly working esrlabs image that is meant to work with the RTL8188CUS chipset and that yields exactly the same error messages.

The dongle works perfectly in client mode and connects to my wifi network without any problem whatsoever. Googling seems to return few results. Have I found a wifi dongle with the RTL8188CUS chipset that doesn't work?

It's this one: ebay usb dongle

The latest version of Raspbian ? with full updates, might help.

I've read somewhere it just works.

I already have 2013-02-09. :-(

Is there a more recent one?

I tried to setup a hotspot with a belkin adapter based on a Realtek chipset, not exactly the same chipset you are using but Realtek none the less. Anyway I was unable to find drivers that supported the proper mode to host a hotspot. Unfortunately setting up a hotspot with a R Pi is still a PITA because most if not all of the dongles out there don't list their chipset on the box.

Your adapter will not act as a hotspot. It's best to find another wireless adapter. Trying to make that one work will drive you nuts.

I don't know if the OP did, but I did. I spent some time fiddling around to try and make it work and only managed to get errors and segfaults. I just took my adapter back to the store and got another. I knew going into the build that it was going to be a pain so I made sure to buy from some place I didn't like that had a good return policy.

Yeah. Absolutely step by step. Twice in case I messed up! As it says in original post, just comes up with those errors. Also the esrlabs image that supposedly kicked it all off just results in the same thing too so it has to be that I've found a dongle that has the RTL8188CUS chipset and still doesn't work for whatever reason.

Ah well, that sucks.
The RT5370 works perfectly though so at least that will be easy for you :D

Unless I've found one that also has an as-yet-unknown problem... Fingers crossed...

The Belkin F5D7050 is less than GBP 5.00 on UK Ebay and works a Dream on Ubuntu 12.04 out of the box. (It is possible to annoy the network settings so it won't play any more.) I've not tried it on RPi ot as a Hotspot.

:D

The Realtek 8188CUS chipset works fine as an AP but you need to use a modified hostapd, git clone then compile it from here:-

https://github.com/segersjens/RTL8188-hostapd

I have working config files if anyone needs them.

The Ralink RT5370 works fine with the standard hostapd and the nl80211 driver.

One chip I haven't got to work is the 8188SU

I'm also on the lookout for an 8188CUS chipset dongle with an SMA connector on it, anyone found one?

Hi woodpecker

Could you post your working config files for the RTL8188CUS as I'm still struggling to get this working after swapping the hostapd

Cheers

I got this to work but then switched to a different chipset...

Download the Unix (Linux) driver here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... loads=true

Go to /<wherever you uncompredd>/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/wpa_supplicant_hostapd/

Unzip wpa_supplicant_hostapd-0.8_rtw_20120803.zip and go into directory wpa_supplicant_hostapd-08/ it creates

go to hostapd/ in that directory

$ make

$ sudo make install

then search for some on line manuals and how-to's for hostapd. Good number out there.

Have fun!

None of that seems to work anymore. With any of the thousands of precompiled special Realtek hostapd binaries available for download, all I get is
ioctl[SIOCSIWMODE]: Operation not permitted
Could not set interface to mode(3)!
Could not set interface to master mode!
rtl871xdrv driver initialization failed.
I think something changed in 3.18.7+ that screwed the pooch.
