PI as WAP

Wed Dec 05, 2018 5:30 pm

Hey everybody,

I'm 'playing' around with a basic idea for a project (not sure where project will go tbh)

But for now what I would like to achieve is

1. Pi as Wireless Access point
2. When people connect to this WAP (with password) a browser page will automatically open (a welcome of some sorts).

So far:

1. Using this tutorial I've set the pi up as a WAP

https://thepi.io/how-to-use-your-raspbe ... ess-point/

2. Then using this tutorial (and lighttPD) https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-lighttpd/

I can open the template page on my laptop but I have to put the PI IP address in

So my question (for now) is once I connect to the PIWWAP how can I get the Lighttpd template to open automatically on my laptop?

Thanks!

Try searching for 'raspberry pi captive portal'
I have not done this myself (yet) so I can't give any additional advice.

Actually that isn't what I'm looking for (apologies for lack of clarity!)

I would like to open up the template html file on lighttPd immediately upon accessing the PIWAP.

My logic being someone can browse a 'local' website from their device.

Hope that makes sense!

Please tell me how that is different from a captive portal?

Hey Dirks,

Thanks for your question.

So as you suggested I looked for captive portal Pi and found this

https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-captive-portal/

What that seems to do is, when you connect to the wifi thtat page will appear as a gateway as in you need to click it to visit sites on the web (eg google etc).

What I want to do is when you join the wifi a page will automatically appear. This page (and all media) will be hosted on the PI only.

Does that make (any) sense?

Thanks again for your time!

Yes, that can be part of the functions of the portal.
But it is certainly not limited to that. AFAICT it's all a matter of getting the configuration right.
Maybe you should also have a look at https://github.com/pihomeserver/Kupiki-Hotspot-Script
I thought that this one looked the most promising one. If I'm setting up a portal myself I would try it first.

But as I said I have not yet tried it myself...
